About the Author

Jeffrey Bennett

Jeffrey Bennett holds a B.A. (1981) in biophysics from the University of California, San Diego, and an M.S. and Ph.D. (1987) in astrophysics from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has taught at every level from preschool through graduate school, including more than 50 college classes in astronomy, physics, mathematics, and education. He served 2 years as a visiting senior scientist at NASA headquarters, where he created NASA's "IDEAS" program, started a program to fly teachers aboard NASA's airborne observatories (including the recently launched SOFIA observatory), and worked on numerous educational programs for the Hubble Space Telescope and other space science missions. He also proposed the idea for and helped develop both the Colorado Scale Model Solar System on the CU-Boulder campus and the Voyage Scale Model Solar System on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. (He is pictured here with the model Sun.) In addition to this astronomy textbook, he has written college-level textbooks in astrobiology, mathematics, and statistics; two books for the general public, On the Cosmic Horizon (Pearson Addison-Wesley, 2001) and Beyond UFOs (Princeton University Press, 2008); and an award-winning series of children's books that includes Max Goes to the Moon, Max Goes to Mars, Max Goes to Jupiter,and Max's Ice Age Adventure. When not working, he enjoys participating in masters swimming and in the daily adventures of life with his wife, Lisa; his children, Grant and Brooke; and his dog, Cosmo. Megan Donahue

Megan Donahue is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. Her current research is mainly on clusters of galaxies: their contents-dark matter, hot gas, galaxies, active galactic nuclei-and what they reveal about the contents of the universe and how galaxies form and evolve. She grew up on a farm in Nebraska and received a B.A. in physics from MIT, where she began her research career as an X-ray astronomer. She has a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of Colorado, for a thesis on theory and optical observations of intergalactic and intracluster gas. That thesis won the 1993 Trumpler Award from the Astronomical Society for the Pacific for an outstanding astrophysics doctoral dissertation in North America. She continued postdoctoral research in optical and X-ray observations as a Carnegie Fellow at Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena, California, and later as an STScI Institute Fellow at Space Telescope. Megan was a staff astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute until 2003, when she joined the MSU faculty. Megan is married to Mark Voit, and they collaborate on many projects, including this textbook and the raising of their children, Michaela, Sebastian, and Angela. Between the births of Sebastian and Angela, Megan qualified for and ran the Boston Marathon. These days, Megan runs, orienteers, and plays piano and bass guitar whenever her children allow it.

 

Nicholas Schneider

Nicholas Schneider is an associate professor in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado and a researcher in the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. He received his B.A. in physics and astronomy from Dartmouth College in 1979 and his Ph.D. in planetary science from the University of Arizona in 1988. In 1991, he received the National Science Foundation's Presidential Young Investigator Award. His research interests include planetary atmospheres and planetary astronomy, with a focus on the odd case of Jupiter's moon Io. He enjoys teaching at all levels and is active in efforts to improve undergraduate astronomy education. Off the job, he enjoys exploring the outdoors with his family and figuring out how things work.

 

Mark Voit

Mark Voit is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. He earned his B.A. in astrophysical sciences at Princeton University and his Ph.D. in astrophysics at the University of Colorado in 1990. He continued his studies at the California Institute of Technology, where he was a research fellow in theoretical astrophysics, and then moved on to Johns Hopkins University as a Hubble Fellow. Before going to Michigan State, Mark worked in the Office of Public Outreach

at the Space Telescope, where he developed museum exhibitions about the Hubble Space Telescope and was the scientist behind NASA’s Hubble Site. His research interests range from interstellar processes in our own galaxy to the clustering of galaxies in the early universe. He is married to coauthor Megan Donahue, and they try to play outdoors with their three children whenever possible, enjoying hiking, camping, running, and orienteering. Mark is also author of the popular book Hubble Space Telescope: New Views of the Universe.

The book is fine, however, the access code did not match the class ID code so had to buy another digital copy for another $93. The book companies and school sure do have a good racket going on....

Nice book, but don't rely on the access code

I was actually pretty surprised that out of all the textbooks I ordered this semester, this one was the most understandable. I'm sure that this is just an overview of what are incredibly complicated theories, but the writing isn't TOO boring and actually explains astronomy in a way that makes sense.

Be careful ordering, though - there are what seems like a billion different editions of this book in addition to a textbook called "The Cosmic Perspective" (no essential) and many places will get ISBN numbers confused, so double check your syllabus to make sure the title matches. Additionally, do NOT depend on the access code enclosed to actually match whatever your online lab is; I wound up having to order one separately because they were not the same.

A Cosmically Good Reference Book!

I'm a professional science writer and curriculum developer who is long out of college. This book is organizer beautifully for conceptually developing planetary geology, geophysics and astronomy on a readable level. Up-to-date with excellent graphics and a nicely done index, it is my go to reference guide. I prefer it over the Internet to help with the "big picture" ideas. I've read other textbooks cover to cover and the organizational flow, coupled with the through chapter development is outstanding. He begins with a page on pedagogy that says it all: Focus on the big picture, work on conceptual ideas, relate the material to what students already know and then idea more obscure details. I've taught for more than 20 years and this is a sound way to impart complex information.

Grade 4-6-- Time travel and historical fiction combine in this novel of the American Revolution. During a camp out, ten-year-old Matthew, his younger sister Katie, and three friends board an old rowboat and are transported to the Delaware River in 1776. The children are caught up in the conflict between the patriots and the Hessians; an encounter with some Indians is thrown in for good measure. Matthew makes friends with a thoroughly believable young foot soldier who dies in the snow. Washington is portrayed as a kind but battle-weary leader who gives Katie his socks to keep her wet feet warm. This story is strongest in its portrayal of the realities of 18th-century warfare. The harrowing river crossing, the confusion, the terrible weather, and the constant deprivations faced by the soldiers are all clearly and vividly described. Unfortunately, the sequences set in modern times seem contrived and pale by comparison; they are never more than a vehicle to get to 1776. The children have an unsophisticated, "gee-whiz" quality about them that readers will find hard to digest. Dialogue is wooden. Time-shift historical novels, such as Janet Lunn's The Root Cellar (Scribners, 1983) can work effectively. In this case, however, the characters from modern America simply don't measure up to those out of history. The overly cute title and cover art to match are unfortunate as well. A GREAT Intermediate Grade Read Aloud!

I just finished reading this book to my fourth grade class. The students were so interested in it that they never wanted read aloud time to end! They learned a lot from this historical fiction piece, as well. Some of the people, places, and ideas have been seen in our social studies curriculum, and they REMEMBER them! This includes things like who the Hessians were, where Trenton is located, and Washington crossing the Delaware. Woodruff's writing has made this time in history so much more real for my students. They have a new understanding of what war is like and a new appreciation for history, unlike any they could have from reading a textbook.

A GREAT FAMILY READ ALOUD

A great family read aloud! I read this book aloud to my three children each night after supper. They got so involved in the story, one night they forgot to watch their favorite TV show. This book makes an excellent read-aloud and is the kind of literature I want my children to be reading.It's exciting, full of humor and imagination. A great way to learn about history. But what I loved most about the book was that it was so full of heart and though the kids laughed alot in the funny parts the also grew very, very quiet suring the sad parts. The story opened up a lot of discussion about war and what happens when men choose to fight for their beliefs. My children and I are looking forward to sharing other books by this author.

Best shared, but independent readers will enjoy.

Should be on every 4-6 teacher's bookshelf. A time-travel adventure gimmick will get the kids to read it, and they'll relatively painlessly learn about some of the horrors of war, including cowardice, that all too many texts gloss over. And yet it's not "politically correct" - Washington is made slightly more human but still heroic, for example. Any kid who does read it will probably ace the test on the American Revolution.... As for the review "Caution Parents" - if you feel that you must keep your children in a bubble, then I'm sure you can talk to them about how foolish you believe the characters to be. Use the book to teach not only the Am. Rev., but also the need to make careful choices.

After 28 years I still consult the same Castellan

I bought his Physical Chemistry 2nd Edition book in December 1973. Everytime I need some insight to a dificult concept I read this book. His part in thermodynamics in unsurpassed, for I have not found such a clear explanation and derivation of the Second Law as his. The same goes for the Structure of Gases and Quantum Mechanical principles.
This book is a treasure. Some time ago I changed the original soft cover to hard, and lined it with brown leather and golden letters.

Great P-Chem text- way better than Atkins

For most students, P-Chem is one of the most challenging courses in the chem curriculum. I was no exception. In undergrad, I had a weekly standing appointment with my P-Chem 2 prof. The text we used was terrible, in my opinion (Atkins and dePaula). Towards the end of that course, I discovered this text by Castellan. Encouraged by positive reviews, I gave it a shot. It really made a difference- the clear explanations, the mathematical interludes etc. I was also able to use it for my graduate Chemical Kinetics course. Not only was it clearer, but it was far more comprehensive than Atkins. I think this just might be one of the best P-Chem texts out there. Highly, highly recommended.

Very useful and clear

In my opinion this book remains one the best written on the field.In fact, it deals with the important topics in an elegant way. The first part is dedicated to the basic termodinamical concepts. This part just needs a little mathematical background but i must say in some ocasions it can become boring (just a little). Once you have red this part wich deals comes (in the middle of the book) the introduction of quantum mechanics. I feel the autor has reached his purprose of telling you the essential without complicating things. To my mind,really well done!!. just say i don't find enough information about group theory ( it is necesary to know a lot of it when you have reached an intermidiate-advanced level in quantum mechanics), but this must be forgiven for the book is intended for undergraduate students essentially.

Perfect ending for Sebastian and Mia! Amazing story!

I was so excited to read The Road To Forgiveness! I loved The Road To Price, but my heart really hated the ending. This book truly was the perfect way to wrap up Mia and Sebastian's story.

Mia ran away from her problems with Sebastian, just like she ran away from facing the pain after Miles' death. Living in Georgia doesn't turn out quite like she was hoping for, and Mia still finds that she is blaming herself for the death of her son. As much as she wants to think that she would be able to give up the child growing inside her because it would be like betraying Miles, she comes to find that she feel attached to her baby.

Sebastian is just amazing. I love him so very much. He hasn't given up on Mia. He followed Mia to Georgia and has been visiting her mother for four weeks. He is desperate to find Mia and take her home.

When Sebastian and Mia finally come face to face again, Mia's heart knows what she needs to do. Despite Mia trying tell herself that she can leave Sebastian, her body and soul are bound to him. Sebastian will stop at nothing to prove to her that they are meant to be together.

What I love about Sebastian and Mia, is that they both worked so hard to try to make things work for them. Mia learns that she not only has to be able to forgive others for the pain that they may have caused her, but she has to have the strength to forgive herself.

The Road To Forgiveness was filled with the same intense sexual chemistry and tension that was in The Road To Price that will leave you fanning yourself and squirming. Justine Elvira can write some seriously hot scenes! I also loved the underlying message of love, trust, forgiveness and overcoming life's tragedies. Amazing story!

Sebastian is still the man

It's good to know Sebastian is still all for his woman, "hi... is that all you can say, hi? I've been so worried about you and all you can say is hi. Where the hell have you been? I've looked everywhere. I talked to your mom, pretty much everyone in your town, and no one knew where you were or if they did, they weren't telling me. And now I see you have been in the next town over this whole time." Sweet Jesus this man does things to my ovaries, "I'll talk to you tomorrow. While you are taking this last night to yourself, just remember how much I love you. I've never stopped." Sebastian is all cocky still, "when you know, you know. I know it's a girl." Sometimes I think he flaunts his wealth, "let's go celebrate. We have the yacht for the night, the staff is already on board, let's go."

Wonderful ending for Sebastian & Mia!

The Road To Forgiveness picks up just a couple weeks after the first book left us and Sebastian has been in Georgia looking for Mia after she just up and fled Miami without a word to him.

There is no doubt that Sebastian loves Mia and is willing to do anything it takes to get her back. He has made tremendous changes in his life since he has met her and since she has left he has been making arrangements to close the final chapter of that life by divorcing his wife Darcy. But when Sebastian finally finds Mia living in the next town over with her gay BFF Jonathon, and when the truth is revealed to him that Mia fled Miami because she is pregnant with his baby, guilt ridden and completely terrified, he becomes more determined than ever to make things right with her and get them all back to Miami as a family.

" He runs his hand through his hair and he looks exhausted...His blue eyes aren't as bright as usual and he looks like he's lost a good twenty pounds. Even with all the physical changes, he still looks as breathtaking as ever. I'm only in his presence for a few seconds and I'm already mesmerized by him."

In TRTP I had mixed feelings about Sebastian but in TRTF he was perfect! When the bomb was dropped about why Mia left I expected him to honestly go off the rocker, especially in the way that he found out- but surprisingly he didn't. What Sebastian decided to do was compromise when Mia said that she didn't know what she wanted to do, and I must say that I LOVED his way of compromising.

"I love compromising with you. I can't wait to show you how great at compromising I am. I always get my way in the end in case you didn't notice...My way is having you, in my bed, a ring on your finger and our baby in the next room. So you better start focusing on that because in the end that is our future"

Mia my heart broke for her in TRTP, finding out about what happened to her as a teenager and then about the tragic death of her son Miles was terrible. But I am so so happy that in TRTF we get to see Mia dealing with overcoming everything that plagues her about her past especially her guilt. I really, really loved watching her come full circle, with the help of her therapist, Charlie, and of course Sebastian and finally accept that she is worthy of love and that being happy is never going to be held against her. And her moment with Charlie when they both realized this together was just *sigh* ... I ♥ Charlie

"You have a wonderful man waiting on you, ready to start a life with you. He wants you and the baby. I find that to be a precious gift and it would break my heart to see you walk away from that"

Oh and you want to know about the steam factor in this book? Well it's through the freaking roof! Justine Elvira can write some wicked hot sex scenes! No really sometimes when you get a book that is lets say 'overly sexed up' I find that the scenes tend to sometimes be repetitive or in other cases overly done but neither was the case when it came to this book. Sebastian and Mia are simply sizzling, and can't keep their hands...or mouths off each other!

Overall I really enjoyed the conclusion of this series, The Road To Forgiveness for me was deep, yet completely satisfying, a well written story about acceptance, and forgiveness. There are times that you will be laughing uncontrollably (probably at something Jonathon said or did) but your heart strings will most definitely be pulled when it comes to Mia. I also feel like it's important to mention there are a couple of typos that I noticed, it wasn't anything overly drastic but I feel like it's important to put out there because for some that's a pet-peeve and I would hate for someone to pick this book up and and not give it the chance it deserves because they catch a few errors. You will laugh, cry, fall head over heels in love with swoon-worthy-dirty-talking Sebastian and you will get a super sweet Happily Ever After what more could you ask for! Grab your copy today!

The Perfect Starter Book

The book covers a lot of bases for the newbie. Scott uses his project manager experience to lay out a logical, rationale approach to this business.

The book contains a lot of useful advice based on Scott's experience running a business and research on the business. Examples include how to get started, what to expect, realistic profit calculations, reviews and recommendations of vending machines, where to purchase them, the pros and cons of candy choices, where to purchase candy, etc.

He thinks like a business person and provides the reader with his experiences from the perspective of his successful business.

The book is an excellent read and is highly recommended to anyone thinking of getting into the business or curious about the candy vending machine business.

I thoroughly enjoy this book. Each time I pick it up, I get something new from it. I mostly love that It is written in layman's terms so anyone can understand it from start to finish. In my opinion, it covers all areas from A to Z. It informs of all positives and even of the negatives. The author is highly knowledgeable about the content and has an excellent demeanor as well. It lists all the nuts and bolts of going into this from novice to expert levels. He gives excellent advice on business in other areas as well. I highly recommend this book-even if you are only curious about becoming a Confectioner; everyone can grasp something from this book!

I have recently been bouncing the idea around of getting into the vending industry as a way to bring in extra cash flow and possibly an escape for the future. This book really laid out all all the facts for me.... I have decided and will be moving forward with my vending venture!!!

Sexy, Sex Scenes.

To Tempt and Angel by Patricia Grasso grabbed my attention from the beginning with its colorful characters and interesting plot. Robert draws me in right away with his charm. He’s obviously a rogue who needs a woman to tame him. Angelica is the perfect mix of hard and soft, and she has a sweet touch of innocence that makes her a great heroine. The mystery of what happened to Angelica’s formerly wealthy, aristocratic family sets the pace for the novel, and piques the reader’s interest right from the start. You want to find out exactly what caused her family’s downfall, and also what exactly her plans for getting even entail. The sexual tension between Robert and Angelica is palpable, and it extends throughout the entire novel. When those two are in a room, you can feel the tension through the pages! The sex scenes are also HOT! HOT! HOT! It’s been awhile since I’ve read a good sex scene, and Ms. Grasso definitely accomplishes that in this book!

I enjoyed reading this book, and the only complaints I have are that the plot is a little out there. Her obsession with getting even with the men who she feels are completely responsible for her father’s downfall is a little annoying at times. I mean, her father was a drunk, so he was partially responsible for his own issues. She chooses to put all the blame on these other wealthy families, and focus on revenge, rather than bringing her family back to what it once was. Also, the fact that all of these men are willing to jump on her crazy train and help her get revenge against families who have never done anything to them is a little strange to me. However, it is fiction, and although her fixation on revenge at times makes her unlikable, overall it is a good read that I definitely recommend to lovers of historical romance.

I love Patricia Grasso. One of my all-time favorite reads is by this author (it also happens to be the third book in this trilogy). So when I was in the mood for a historical romance, I decided to reach for a Patricia Grasso book. Imagine my delight when I saw that one that I hadn’t read yet was available as a free read at Amazon.

This series follows the three Douglas sisters. They’re the daughters of an impoverished earl and they’ve grown up far from the Ton doing whatever the needed to do to make ends meet. In To Tempt an Angel, while at street fair, Angelica meets Robert when she cheats Robert out of a good chunk of money and he’s smitten. And so begins our romp through London.

I adored Robert… well, outside of the wanting to make Angelica his mistress instead of marrying her. But, he’s pretty up front about what he wants when it comes to Angelica. Granted he did hide his title from her early on, but when one is chased because of their name. But he supported her from the day they met and just wanted to make her life easier. Who doesn’t want that kind of man? I mean, he doesn’t want to run her life or completely take over. He wants her to be the best she can be, but be there to hold her up if she needs it… and she will.

Now Angelica on the other hand was a little harder for me to like. I did enjoy watching her trying to fit into the Ton after growing up on the outskirts. But I wasn’t real fond of her revenge motives. And while I understand that she was having a hard time trusting Robert after she finds out he has a title (she thought he was a mere “Mr.” when they first meet) and even more so when she learns who his father is, I got a little tired of her pushing him away, then falling into his arms only to push again. It just seemed like she kept trying to find a reason to… almost punish him. She’s not trusting her gut but allowing outside influences to mess with her head. And yes, that’s human. But it was driving me insane and I just wanted to reach through the pages and shake Angelica.

All in all, I did enjoy this book and couldn’t put it down once I got started. Was it perfect? No. But it was a great introduction to the Douglas family and I can’t want to continue the series.

Another wonderful book by the author!! All Angelica has wanted for the past 10 years is revenge on the men who ruined her father. While she is scamming people in a dice game she meets Robert Roy. Unbeknownst to her Robert is the son of one of the men she wants revenge on. A wonderful read that has passion, lies, revenge, twists & turns and finally happiness!!

This textbook is envisioned as the basis of a college course in print, broadcast and online journalism ethics, for either graduate students or undergraduate juniors and seniors. The book will be designed for a 15-week semester with two and a half hours of classroom time each week, though an instructor could easily adapt the content to other academic schedules. The first one-third of the book will guide the students as they learn the principles of ethics and their application to resolving dilemmas in journalism. The remainder of the book will analyze the main themes of ethical issues in the newsroom and provide real-life case studies for the students to practice their decision-making skills. Instructors will receive a separate guide with PowerPoint presentations, a model course schedule, possible quiz and exam questions, and detailed suggestions on conducting the discussions of the case studies.

Distinctive Features

• Unlike other books in its genre, this text will be prescriptive and to the point. That is, it will not merely discuss the ethical issues of journalism; it will give aspiring journalists (and other interested students) the tools they need to make professional decisions they can defend. Rather than overwhelming the students with theory, this text will offer just enough to enable the students to thoroughly grasp the importance of ethics and to use their own sense of ethics to make those decisions.
• Unlike the other books, this will be written by someone who has both extensive newsroom experience andextensive teaching experience. With all due modesty, I submit that none of the authors in this field can match my combined experience of 41 years in the newsroom, including 33 as a managing editor, and my more than eight years as a college professor What I intend to do is to combine the ideas of leading scholars and leading journalists to create a text whose essence is practical advice.
• Unlike the other books, this text will be ready for teachers and students to use off-the-shelf for a one-semester course. The chapter sequence logically fits a teaching plan: Students first get a foundation in applied ethics and decision-making; then they examine in detail the main ethical issues that journalists face today. I field-tested this comprehensive approach in teaching the news media ethics course for 16 semesters, with appreciative student reviews. Another Penn State professor has successfully taught the course twice using the same material [see Malcolm Moran’s letter in this package].
• Unlike the other books, this text will incorporate the views of 15 to 20 distinguished journalists – print, broadcast and online – whom I will interview in depth as part of the research. These views will add an important dimension to my own views and to those of scholars and practitioners who will be quoted from existing books and periodicals and from interviews. (The enclosed sample chapters likely will be enhanced as a result of the interviews. For example, the interviewees will be asked why ethics is important in journalism, and their ideas likely will strengthen the introductory paragraphs. Throughout the second phase of the book, chapters will include selected interviewees’ responses to practical questions about applied ethics; for example, under “deception,” they will be asked whether it is acceptable for a reporter to “bluff” a source into revealing information by implying that the reporter already possesses that information. Working journalists disagree about the practice, one side arguing that it is unethical and the other maintaining that it is just resourceful reporting. The outside experts also will be asked to add their ideas on “the changing media environment,” chapter 12, in which the book will address the trends affecting the relationship of the newsroom to the business side in the news media industry.) Finally, the teacher’s guide will contain these experts’ comments on the case studies, a feature that will be useful when the cases are discussed in class.
• Unlike some of the other books, this text will employ actual case studies rather than fictional accounts. Using actual cases imparts a sense of realism to the discussion and illustrates that, in making their professional decisions, the future journalists will be dealing more often with shades of gray than with black-and-white distinctions. Each case is selected to explain an important nuance in the ethical-issue themes (e.g., privacy, conflicts of interest, deception) that will be presented in the second phase of the book. The students will have an opportunity to match their decision-making skills against the trial-and-error efforts of the professionals who actually made the decisions. To facilitate the students’ preparation for class, a series of questions is included with each case.

Inspiring book, a must for all journalists

Gene Roberts suggested I pick this book up. It's kept me up past midnight every night since, devouring its content. This is a wonderful reminder to journalists about why we do what we do and a great lesson to readers about why it should matter.

An outstanding book--for anyone who follows the news

Gene Foreman, now retired after a distinguished career as a newspaper editor, has produced a brilliant book that adds wisdom to the the ongoing public debate over journalistic ethics. It is brightly written and highly readable by anybody, not just journalists and the people they write about, but by anyone who cares about the role of the media in a democracy. Diogenes can rest. Here is an honest man!
