The Locust Effect: Why the End of Poverty Requires the End of Violence, by Gary A. Haugen, Victor Boutros

A Washington Post bestseller

While the world has made encouraging strides in the fight against global poverty, the hidden plague of everyday violence silently undermines our best efforts to help the poor. Common violence like rape, forced labor, illegal detention, land theft, and police abuse has become routine and relentless. And like a horde of locusts devouring everything in its path, the unchecked plague of violence ruins lives, blocks the road out of poverty, and undercuts development. How has this plague of violence grown so ferocious? In one of the most remarkable social disasters of the last half century, basic public justice systems in the developing world have descended into a state of utter collapse, and there's nothing shielding the poor from violent people.

Gary A. Haugen and Victor Boutros offer a searing account of how we got here and what it will take to end the plague. The Locust Effect is a gripping journey into the streets and slums where fear is a daily reality for billions of the world's
poorest, where safety is secured only for those with money, and where much of our well-intended aid is lost in the daily chaos of violence. While their call to action is urgent, Haugen and Boutros provide hope, a real solution and an ambitious way forward. The Locust Effect will forever change the way we understand global poverty,
and will help secure a safe path to prosperity for the global poor in the 21st century.

A Look Inside: The Locust Effect [Click Images to Enlarge]

Review

"Gripping and perspective-altering book." --David Brooks, The New York Times

"Throughout my life I've seen firsthand that while talent, ambition, and hard work are distributed equally among all people around the world, many face challenges each day simply surviving. The Locust Effect is a compelling reminder that if we are to create a 21st century of shared prosperity, we cannot turn a blind eye to the violence that threatens our common humanity." --President Bill Clinton

"The Locust Effect provides a much-needed argument for reducing violence against the poor and a demonstration -- through first hand stories that are both shocking and true -- of why that goal is so vital. By reminding us that basic legal protections are not a privilege, but a universal right, Gary Haugen has issued a moral call to arms that informs the brain and touches the heart." --Madeleine Albright, Former U.S. Secretary of State

"This extraordinary book offers surprising and valuable insights about the nature and the drivers of the plague of violence that haunts the global poor as well as smart ideas about how to tackle it. A must-read." --Moiss Nam, Scholar, Carnegie Endowment, author of The End of Power, and former editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy

"You may 'know' that the world's poor suffer common everyday violence -- robbery, extortion, rape, murder, torture-a stream of humiliating assaults on their dignity. You may 'know' that this implies lost productivity and ultimately lost growth for low-income economies. Haugen asks why, if we know all that, we do so little? ...Read this book and you will be convinced the issue deserves more of your attention." --Nancy Birdsall, Founding President, Center for Global Development

"Some of the biggest ideas are right in front of us but still invisible. The Locust Effect brings home, in convincing and powerful detail, the simple but oh-so-important point that poverty results from violence as much as violence results from poverty. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in development, security, and the failure of billions of people to achieve their potential." --Anne-Marie Slaughter, President, New America Foundation, and Professor Emeritus of Politics and International Affairs, Princeton University

"The Locust Effect presents a compelling and shocking portrayal of the relationship between violence and poverty. The book convincingly argues that violence is the missing link in our understanding of global poverty and of our development interventions. Haugen has spent decades in extraordinary work to address violence, to free those subjected to it, and to apply the rule of law. His firsthand account brings needed moral and developmental urgency to the relentless and pervasive violence poor people experience, especially women and girls. This is a must-read book that will fundamentally expand our analysis of the nature of global poverty and our efforts to overcome it." --Maria Otero, Former U.S. Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, and Former President and CEO of ACCION International

"In a world of simplistic and knee-jerk responses to the world's problems, Gary Haugen arrives with insight, wisdom, and realism. The Locust Effect is a game-changer. He shows us how violence slices through all our good intentions, negating development, rights, and freedom. This is a book that is as smart as it is heartfelt, as grounded as it is creative. These are ideas of real power and grace." --Kevin Bales, Professor of Contemporary Slavery, University of Hull, and Co-Founder, Free the Slaves

"This crucial study carefully documents the fundamental truth that the end of poverty demands the end of violence. Both fascinating and important, Gary Haugen's book is a moving demonstration that is at once fact-filled and highly readable -- a truly unusual combination." --Laurence H. Tribe, Carl M. Loeb University Professor and Professor of Constitutional Law, Harvard Law School

"The Locust Effect is a wake-up call to everyone who cares about global poverty. As International Justice Mission's Gary Haugen and co-author Victor Boutros report, with painstaking data and breathtaking cases from the field, unchecked violent crime against the poorest, especially girls and women, isn't just a human rights problem. It is a drag on development that no amount of foreign aid can fix if functioning public justice systems aren't part of the solution." --Jacquelline Fuller, Director, Google Giving

"The Locust Effect does a great service to masses of poor and vulnerable children and adults who are victims of everyday, ordinary violent crime but who are wholly unprotected by law enforcement institutions. International Justice Mission and authors Gary Haugen and Victor Boutros have put the life and death issue of poor people's access to the rule of law squarely on the agenda of governments, development institutions, and civil society." --Elisa Massimino, President and CEO of Human Rights First

"Gary Haugen reveals in painful detail the brokenness of our criminal justice systems. He also shows us that it's possible to fix them. The work of IJM that he narrates from Cebu City in the Philippines, for example, is an extraordinary story of how a committed team can come to understand justice system failures, support improvements at every step in the law enforcement process, strengthen the hand of internal reform champions, and achieve transformation. There are people in every corner of the world working to advance justice. I recommend this book to all of them." --Vivek Maru, CEO and Founder of Namati, and Founder and Former Director for Timap for Justice

"The Locust Effect makes a compelling case that a country that wants to grow and prosper needs a public justice system that protects its people, especially victims of crime, exploitation and oppression. Developing nations that must provide their citizens police who are honest, active and willing to protect victims of crime and exploitation -- especially the poorest and most vulnerable in society." -Major General Pol Phie They, Director of Cambodia's Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Department

"An insightful, incisive analysis of violence as it impacts every level of the plight of the poor. A compelling wake-up call for all who care about justice and human rights. It tells the truth and gives tools and guidelines that demand attention." --Tim Costello, Chief Executive, World Vision Australia

"I have seen firsthand the ravages of violence against women and children all over the world. International Justice Mission continues to bring to light the impact of common crime not only on individual victims, but on whole countries. The Locust Effect is a must-read book for everybody who cares about the poorest of the poor." --Cindy Hensley McCain, Humanitarian and Business Owner

"Gary Haugen and IJM are waking up the social consciences of the worldwide Church even as they have shown the international human rights community 'why the end of poverty requires the end of violence' caused by the widespread failure of justice systems in the developing world. In this important book, Haugen continues to do both." --Tim Keller, Redeemer Presbyterian Church of New York City

"Gary Haugen's The Locust Effect is an exhaustive, devastatingly painful look at the very problem the 'civilized world' would rather not face: the systemic, unspeakable violence against the poorest of the world's poor. This book is hard to read. One wants to turn away. And yet the reader can only wonder what would happen without the profound work of Gary Haugen and International Justice Mission and their tireless efforts to end the madness." --Kathie Lee Gifford, Host on NBC's The TODAY Show

"When the bell tolls for justice throughout the modern world, Gary Haugen is most often nearby, raising his voice (and ours) as a tireless sentinel for freedom for the poor and oppressed--those who live beyond the reach of the protections many in the western world take for granted day by day. In The Locust Effect, Gary unveils the deeper issues of poverty and uncovers what we often fail to see, or worse, do not want to acknowledge is real." --Louie Giglio, Pastor, Passion City Church

"In a remarkably sensitive study, very aptly named The Locust Effect, the authors have provided many new valuable insights into the intimate relationship between poverty and violence plaguing the billions of global poor in many post-colonial societies across continents. This is also probably the first time that Western observers have come upon the unpleasant reality that it is, in fact, the native political establishments in South Asian countries themselves who stubbornly refuse to break away from the colonial ruler supportive police and criminal justice systems, concepts, laws, procedures, and mind sets imposed by the imperialist rulers, thus denying their peoples the benefits of a citizen friendly law enforcement system. An invaluable companion to all criminal justice studies." --Kirpal Dhillon, Former Director General of Police in the Indian states of Punjab and Madhya Pradesh; Vice Chancellor, Bhopal University, India

About the Author

Gary A. Haugen is founder and president of International Justice Mission, a global human rights agency that protects the poor from violence. The largest organization of its kind, IJM has partnered with law enforcement to rescue thousands of victims of violence. Haugen was Director of the U.N. investigation in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide, and has been recognized by the U.S. State Department as a Trafficking in Persons "Hero" -- the U.S. government's highest honor for anti-slavery leadership.

Victor Boutros is a federal prosecutor who investigates and tries nationally significant cases of police misconduct, hate crimes, and international human trafficking around the country on behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice. He is also a member of the Justice Department's Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit, which consolidates the expertise of some of nation's top human trafficking prosecutors and enhances the federal government's ability to identify and prosecute large human trafficking networks.

A necessary companion to 'Half the Sky'
By J&B Lea
A plague of locusts can lay waste to anything and everything in its wake. "The Locust Effect" makes the compelling case that violence (common, everyday person-on-person violence) is laying waste to anything and everything for the poor in the developing world. Our efforts to feed the poor, educate the illiterate, uplift and empower girls and women, combat cultural prejudices, stimulate bruised economies, provide shelter for the homeless cannot and will not succeed unless we change the conversation and start to consider how deeply violence affects the very people we hope to help.

We would do well not to simply assume we know what the poor need. When asked, what the poor want most is not education, food, shelter or opportunity - they want to live in safety, without fear that the little they have and those they love could be decimated by evil-doers acting with impunity. They want justice: justice which HAS to come from public justice systems.

The thesis of the book is simple: the end of poverty requires the end of violence; and to end violence, countries need functioning public justice systems.

Haugen and Boutros carefully, academically, painstakingly and passionately argue that violence against the poor is both the biggest issue which the poor are facing, and also the single issue which the world at large has yet to address for human rights. They are clear in their probing as to how criminal justice systems got to be so bad, sober in their assessment of the task ahead, 100% convincing that this is the issue we HAVE to face head on if we are to seek justice for the billions of suffering people in our world.

The Locust Effect is not light reading. It doesn't have a silver bullet solution. It is emotionally unsatisfying to read: I wanted at least one really happy ending for the girls and women mentioned in the book. The book gives none - It is deeply disturbing and yet hopeful and purposeful.

Reading Half the Sky by Kristof and WuDunn was inspirational and has opened up a new conversation for how we can and must address the issues facing girls and women in the world. The Locust Effect is a necessary companion for us to continue that conversation. Criminals need to be tackled head on. Sex traffickers, rapists, slave owners, torturers and molesters cannot continue with impunity; and to do that - we need to get actively talking and thinking about public justice. This book is necessary reading if we are to make a meaningful contribution to tackling poverty in the 21st century.

Profound insights on violence and the poor … all in one volume
By S. Hoover
"The Locust Effect" articulates the missing link in the international vision to eradicate extreme global poverty. The missing link: effectively reducing the lawless violence that the poor face daily. It rips apart the lives of the impoverished and lays waste to all other anti-poverty efforts. Authors Gary Haugen and VIctor Boutros bring decades of first-hand experience walking alongside vulnerable peoples to this groundbreaking book on justice. They have repeatedly witnessed the gut-wrenching failures of law enforcement and courtrooms to protect and to represent our neediest global citizens.

"The Locust Effect" meets its goal to build a rigorous case that the elimination of everyday violence is now the most critical factor in the battle against poverty. The book effectively demonstrates how such common violence robs impoverished families of the ability to use the new schools, new medical clinics, and the new water wells. Access to these resources is essentially denied when violent perpetrators roam unhindered to rape, beat, and rob vulnerable members of the community.

Stories of real people in real crises open the book. We learn their names and their situations. Their brave willingness to share their stories allows the authors to put faces on the atrocities the poor face daily. Their stories re-surface throughout the book, along with new victims and new heroes in the fight against violence. But "The Locust Effect" is also full of hard facts.

Statistics and studies fill the middle chapters. Like stats? You will overdose here! Don't like stats: skim the middle chapters but pause to absorb the stories and summaries. Ultimately, the abundance of references makes this book an invaluable resource for anyone studying or advocating on issues of global poverty. For the first time ever, titles and locations of academic journal articles, United Nations documents, World Bank reports, non-government organizations’ research, and personal interviews related to justice issues are all collated in one place. The bibliography and endnotes alone fill 40-plus pages in the volume.

"The Locust Effect" concludes with hope. The authors detail examples of reformed justice systems in modern-day cities as well as nations. It can be done! These final chapters take the “vastness” argument off the table -- that the problem is so huge and so complex and so risky that we cannot address it.

Haugen and Boutros reduce the enormity of the justice system brokenness into manageable, addressable pieces. They even suggest areas of research that are missing and needed to help move this conversation forward. In short time, "The Locust Effect" will soon come to serve the invaluable role of conversation-starter with common language and baselines.

Without reservation, I recommend "The Locust Effect". My shelves hold numerous works that address global poverty. None, however, address this missing piece in the struggle against poverty. Through The Locust Effect, I came to appreciate that the plague of everyday violence is the missing link toward the goal of eradicating extreme poverty worldwide. This volume will truly become one of the go-to resources for all who seek to crush global poverty!!

A tool for Knowledge and Motivation.
By Stephanie Parrish
Imagine what life would be like if you woke up every single day afraid to go to school or afraid to walk to your local grocery store. Afraid to share your story with local authorities because you knew your voice would not be heard.

Imagine what life would be like if you had NOTHING shielding you from violence.

“While the world has made encouraging strides in the fight against global poverty, there is a hidden crisis silently undermining our best efforts to help the poor….

…It is a plague of everyday VIOLENCE.”

Everyday thousands of people around the world work for humanitarian organizations invested in helping those in need, ending poverty and spreading awareness for Universal Human Rights. Many of these organizations solely focus on water aid, food aid, disease prevention, shelter, and education; unintentionally avoiding the underlying CORE issue(VIOLENCE) that strongly dictates the overall impact or efforts of their work in ending poverty.

There are many devastating things happening all over the world at any given time, but this book genuinely emphasizes how important everyday basic safety truly is in order to lead any sort of a productive life.

For example, we may be able to build a school in the developing world to give the opportunity for a substantial education, but of what use is this school if young girls are traumatized and afraid to walk there every morning due to the fear of rape or abduction? They inevitably do not receive a formal education, nor do they receive necessary assistance or protection from local law enforcement in order for them to flourish and make steady progress.

The core argument of The Locust Effect is that the direct solution to violence against the poor is law enforcement.

How can a society restrain violence if it only addresses the exacerbating factors in the absence of a functioning justice system? The Locust Effect lifts the veil on common forms of violence against the poor in the developing world(Corrupt police officers, forced labor, rape, murder) and sheds light on the lives of the 4 billion who live outside of the law’s protection.

This book is painful to read, but worth every heartbreaking minute. There are many detailed personal accounts of devastating violence against families and individuals who have no honest or effective way of protecting themselves. Nonetheless, it’s an enlightening and necessary read pertaining to universal human rights for those interested in making a lasting and positive global impact.

In order for there to be successful unified progress in ending global poverty, we must first address the underlying core issue of violence and the brokenness of developing world justice systems.

Violence and abuse may often be hidden, however we can no longer deny or turn a blind eye to it’s powerful negative impact on the world’s poor.

The Locust Effect will effortlessly inspire you and lead YOU to TAKE ACTION.

This book can be used as a tool for knowledge and motivation. It will forever change the way you view those living in poverty, and leave you with the hope that we CAN and WILL create safer environments for the poor to be given the equal opportunity to thrive!

In 2015 there will still be around 883 million people living in extreme poverty(according to The Locust Effect).

IJM is wholeheartedly invested in fighting to help those who have been taken advantage of(without financial means to protect themselves). This is a must read! And will hopefully evoke a passion inside of you to get involved with the International Justice Mission.

Our review......
A clever and absorbing read, From The Sky is the new release from J.E. Nicassio and it's sure to send your imagination into overdrive. With a refreshingly original premise underpinning her tale it makes for a relatively quick read, but it's one in which Nicassio's made every word count. Delivering a well-conceived and intriguing page turner which notably manages to avoid the trite clichs of the genre, her characters are imaginatively observed and well nuanced to bring out their distinctive persona's along with the peculiarities of their other worldly origins. Altogether, it makes for a visually compelling and atmospheric narrative, whilst Nicassio confidently manipulates the multiple threads of her plot without floundering in the detail. With just the right balance of romance, intrigue and action, the alien elements aren't overplayed, but work wonderfully together without being predictable. Most importantly, Samantha Hunter is a strong enough character to carry a series, which will certainly draw much interest from fans of the genre.

Sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats and the pages rapidly turning, From The Sky definitely deserves your attention and bodes well for future releases from Nicassio. It is highly recommended.

From the Sky is a delightful young adult novel by J.E. Nicassio. This exciting book is a blend of government conspiracy novel and sci-fi with a strong element of romance. Samantha Hunter is a very wounded teenager. Her twin brother Finn is killed in a car accident one night and Sam is charged with driving while texting. Sam herself is almost killed in the accident and her mother dies soon after. Sam thinks this is all her fault and the guilt is tearing her apart. Sam and her dad need a change. They need a new lease on life so they move from Pennsylvania to New Mexico. But the past, particularly that fateful accident, follows Samantha to New Mexico in the form of Lucien Foster, a tall handsome boy that Sam finds herself drawn to despite her pain and guilt.

From the Sky is at its core a teenage romance and we get a good look at young love and what it means to love when everything seems to be against you. Lucien is not what he seems and when he reveals the truth of who he is to Samantha, her world is changed forever. These are great characters that are realistically portrayed. They are American teenagers who have to grow up fast because dark forces are out to get them. J.E. Nicassio gives us a past paced and exciting tale full of car chases, close calls, and the angst of star-crossed love. Teens and even older readers will love From the Sky.

From the Author
Writing is about opening your soul and letting your vulnerable side shine through. You have to have a thick outer skin. Being an author is not giving in or giving up and never ever listening to the people who said you couldn't do it. You just do it and never give up on your dreams. I have been kicked down and had the wind knocked out of me but something in me kept me going.I hope you love Sam and Lucien's story as much as I loved writing.

J. E. Nicassio has changed me over to the world of Sci-Fi reading & I honestly had trouble putting the book down.
By poptarts
Let me preface by saying I am not a Sci-Fi reader. I primarily stick with suspense writers so this was a new genre for me to try. Since i prefer page-turners, I wasn't expecting to enjoy an alien story at all but since I've set a goal to try new authors every week, I thought 'why not?'.
Now confession time - I absolutely loved this book!! A good writer makes you envision every scene just like you are watching a movie & I actually thought- why this could actually be the beginnings of the next big movie similar to the Divergent or Hunger Games books!! J. E. Nicassio has changed me over to the world of Sci-Fi reading and I honestly had trouble putting the book down. Talk about a page-turner, it held my interest the whole way through the book. I remember, at one point, reading & thinking to myself 'I can't wait to review this book", I was that surprised by the good read. Thank you for opening my eyes to a new genre and I can only hope I enjoy other Sci-Fi writers are as much as I did your work!! I seriously cannot wait for the next in the series!!! You have a new fan J. E. Nicassio!!!... and I hope to see this made into a movie in the future!!

From The Sky, will have you on the edge of your seat from the first page. You get to meet Samantha Hunter,a courageous girl anyone would love to have as a friend, and experience an entire new world you never knew existed right here on Earth! But nothing comes close to the beautiful and breathtaking love she feels for the gorgeous Lucien. A love he just as strongly feels for her too. I give From The Sky five stars and can't wait for the next one!

Really makes the grade!
By Avid Reader
Sam and Lucien make a great match in a novel that’s full of original ideas and plenty of unexpected surprises to keep you guessing to the end. I wax and wane with this genre because there are too many lack lustre books coming to the market but From The Sky really made the grade for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is a book to be treasured...
By Rahul
This is a book that evokes the 'blessings' of the great spiritual master Babaji also known as the 'Mahavatar' which means a great incarnation of God himself.

The book provides a list of very core and 'powerful' mantras which if one chants with sincerity of heart will evoke divine blessings. Not only that - the 'manasa yoga' means the yoga to purify one's mind from the 'filth' out there today.

Reading and then sincerely following the teachings of Maha Munindra Babaji (king of sages) one can evolve and purify his consciousness.

In this era of troublesome times, this book's teachings will bring that great peace and satisfaction. One needs to follow the path with sincerity, obey the laws of 'Dharma' first (i.e. vegeterianism, controlling one's physical senses, etc.) and then only the 'mantras' and techniques taught in this 'divine' book will follow through.

All the best.

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell: A Novel, by Susanna Clarke

At the dawn of the nineteenth century, two very different magicians emerge to change England's history. In the year 1806, with the Napoleonic Wars raging on land and sea, most people believe magic to be long dead in England-until the reclusive Mr Norrell reveals his powers, and becomes a celebrity overnight.

Soon, another practicing magician comes forth: the young, handsome, and daring Jonathan Strange. He becomes Norrell's student, and they join forces in the war against France. But Strange is increasingly drawn to the wildest, most perilous forms of magic, straining his partnership with Norrell, and putting at risk everything else he holds dear.

Amazon.com Review
It's 1808 and that Corsican upstart Napoleon is battering the English army and navy. Enter Mr. Norrell, a fusty but ambitious scholar from the Yorkshire countryside and the first practical magician in hundreds of years. What better way to demonstrate his revival of British magic than to change the course of the Napoleonic wars? Susanna Clarke's ingenious first novel, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, has the cleverness and lightness of touch of the Harry Potter series, but is less a fairy tale of good versus evil than a fantastic comedy of manners, complete with elaborate false footnotes, occasional period spellings, and a dense, lively mythology teeming beneath the narrative. Mr. Norrell moves to London to establish his influence in government circles, devising such powerful illusions as an 11-day blockade of French ports by English ships fabricated from rainwater. But however skillful his magic, his vanity provides an Achilles heel, and the differing ambitions of his more glamorous apprentice, Jonathan Strange, threaten to topple all that Mr. Norrell has achieved. A sparkling debut from Susanna Clarke--and it's not all fairy dust. --Regina Marler

From Publishers Weekly
The drawing room social comedies of early 19th-century Britain are infused with the powerful forces of English folklore and fantasy in this extraordinary novel of two magicians who attempt to restore English magic in the age of Napoleon. In Clarke's world, gentlemen scholars pore over the magical history of England, which is dominated by the Raven King, a human who mastered magic from the lands of faerie. The study is purely theoretical until Mr. Norrell, a reclusive, mistrustful bookworm, reveals that he is capable of producing magic and becomes the toast of London society, while an impetuous young aristocrat named Jonathan Strange tumbles into the practice, too, and finds himself quickly mastering it. Though irritated by the reticent Norrell, Strange becomes the magician's first pupil, and the British government is soon using their skills. Mr. Strange serves under Wellington in the Napoleonic Wars (in a series of wonderful historical scenes), but afterward the younger magician finds himself unable to accept Norrell's restrictive views of magic's proper place and sets out to create a new age of magic by himself. Clarke manages to portray magic as both a believably complex and tedious labor, and an eerie world of signs and wonders where every object may have secret meaning. London politics and talking stones are portrayed with equal realism and seem indisputably part of the same England, as signs indicate that the Raven King may return. The chock-full, old-fashioned narrative (supplemented with deft footnotes to fill in the ignorant reader on incidents in magical history) may seem a bit stiff and mannered at first, but immersion in the mesmerizing story reveals its intimacy, humor and insight, and will enchant readers of fantasy and literary fiction alike.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School - This delightful first novel exerts a strong and seductive pull on readers who might otherwise balk at its length. Like Philip Pullman's work, it is dark, deep, and challenging. It compares dead-on with Jane Austen's novels, and YAs who have underappreciated her wit may find it delicious when applied to magicians. Clarke even tosses in a bit of Dickens and Hardy - with great characterization, subplots, and a sense of fate bearing down hard on us. At stake is the future of English magic, which has nearly dwindled to all theory by the early 1800s, after centuries of prominence. When the book opens, only the reclusive and jealous Gilbert Norrell is practicing. Enter Jonathan Strange, a natural who has never studied magic formally. Norrell resents, then adopts Strange as a pupil whose growth he insists on controlling until the two come to the impasse that nearly leads them to destroy one another. Strange champions the 12th century's "Raven King" as the greatest magician in English history and hopes to summon him from Faerie, an alternate world. Norrell is determined to erase both from English memory - to hide the fact that he himself made a bargain with a fairy that has cost three people their lives, though their hearts go on dismally beating. Expertly written and imagined, the book is a feast for fans of fantasy, historical novels, or simply fabulously engrossing reads. - Emily Lloyd, formerly at Rehoboth Beach Public Library, DE

A pleasure throughout but patience required
By B. Capossere
I'm giving Jonathan Strange a 5 for the simply reason that I thoroughly enjoyed it all the way through, but I'd warn all readers to be more wary than usual of reviews (including this one). More than many books, this one I think will be a matter of true personal taste and experience will be your only truly accurate guide.

To begin with, Strange is often referred to as a "fantasy" novel, an "adult" Harry Potter (ignoring Potter's self-obvious claim to millions of "adult" readers). If you're expecting fantasy in the form of Harry Potter magic (though done by bigger people employing bigger words) or Lord of the Rings-like quests and elves, be advised neither is here. Fantastical might be a better genre-word here than "fantasy". There is certainly magic here, both human and faerie (very different forms), but when one of the major storylines is how magic has gradually disappeared from England and when one of the major characters has as his purpose the destruction (not Black Tower hordes of evil monsters destruction but economic, social, or legal destruction) of those who would become magician, as you might imagine there isn't a lot of magic going on, at least not for the first few hundred pages. Those looking for a lot of wand-waving or fireball-flinging would best look elsewhere.

One of the signs of the book's maturity is that one can't really generalize too much about the magic in it. Magic is almost invisible in the beginning and near-constant toward the end. It is scholarly, bookish and tedious and also vigorous, physical and exciting. It is human and Faerie and a melding of the two. It is all-powerful (Spain complains about the rearrangement of several of their country's geographic landmarks) and ineffective (you can see visions in water but they seldom are helpful). It is the subject of dry articles in academic journals and the cause of near-rumbles in local taverns. It is wonderfully complex and realistic. It is at times dazzlingly original (ships and sailors formed of rain, statues anguished over crimes committed beneath them), and handled often as if it is the most pedestrian, mundane aspect of daily life, except for the whole raise-the-dead, towering-shaft-of-neverending-night sort of thing.

As for other fantasy genre elements, there is no band of diverse creatures setting out on a quest to defeat some dark lord; no tall, shining elvish archers; no nomadic horse-loving tribes. If you want to find a Tolkien analogue, it isn't Lord of the Rings but Smith of Wooten Major, an often forgotten story about the collision of the human and faerie realms.

Strange is also referred to as a historical novel. It is set in early 19th century England, Wellington and other historical figures make their appearance, characters travel in carriages rather than cars. But the book's historical setting, like its magical element, is more pervasive than emphatic. It exists alongside the characters and story and serves them rather than being front and center as is true of so many historical novels. One is always aware of the historical setting, but I don't think anyone would come away from Strange with a truly enlarged understanding of the time period, as say one might from Lindsay Davis' mystery series set in ancient Rome, where specific foods and social rituals and forms of clothing etc. are constantly set before the reader. The setting is utterly believable, I'm sure meticulously researched, detailed and accurate, but it still doesn't feel like a "historical novel". Which from my view is a strength not a weakness.

My advice therefore is not to place your should I read or not bet on the book's labels. What should you know?

It's long. Very long. Longer than it seems according to the page count, since there are pages and pages of small-type footnotes throughout. Is it too long? I'm sure many people will think so. It takes its time in setting up story and character, leisurely is probably too fast-paced a description. It is far from compelling in the first few hundred pages in the sense of "must turn page to find out what happens". Personally, I found it compelling through character and style rather than plot. If you prefer plot, then prepare to be somewhat bored until the latter third where it moves along more speedily and in more traditional compelling manner.

It's discursive. Very discursive. It will wander away quite often and sometimes at great length from the major plot lines, interrupting with academic asides or summaries/analyses of old folktales, or snippets of poetry. Again, some will probably find this maddening, some will simply skip the footnotes entirely. I liked the discursive nature of the book and found the footnotes often as enjoyable as the main text, always tolerable, and only rarely annoying.

It is often beautifully written. it's one of those books where you'll pause over a line to reread it or let its effect linger a little while, whether due to the simple beauty of description, the efficiency of its brevity, or its dry wit. It is a true pleasure to read. Not to find out what happened. Simply to read.

It's often funny. It is at times frighteningly dark. It has at times a domestic feel and at other times a grand mythic feel, especially in connection to the Raven King, the mysterious magician-king of old North England who also ruled over a land of Faerie and allegedly another land bordering Hell who disappeared centuries ago with the promise of return. Whether that return is to be wished for or not is the core dispute between the two magicians of the title.

It is character driven. There are many wonderful scenes of "action", more so toward the latter half, but they tend to be understated while the book focuses more on character. Both Strange and Norrell are fully-fleshed out characters, totally believable in all their assets and flaws. We are given the time to know them and if Strange seems more appealing due to his more active role in the book, Norrell is no less accessible or recognizable for his minor jealousies and passiveness, though we may wish to deny the same traits in ourselves. The story of their meeting, their partnership, their sundering and what comes next is one of the major storylines and one of the more engaging, even if it happens mostly on the interior and despite the fact that the characters themselves are not particularly compelling by nature.

There is a lot more one could say about this book. It's a lengthy work and a dense work. One could discuss the conflict between wild faerie and civilized England--presented in shades of grey rather than black and white. The sharp social commentary. The distant narrative tone. But this review is edging close to the length of one of her footnotes, so I'll bring it to a close.

Try Jonathan Strange. If it doesn't draw you along, keep trying. If it still doesn't, try skimming footnotes, skimming pages, dipping in now and then to keep up on plot and catch one of those well-crafted lines, then come in for a landing and try again word by word. It isn't a rollercoaster ride on a summer Saturday . But it is a memorably gorgeous walk on a crisp autumn day, filled with slow sensual delight. Highly recommended.

Quite the book.
By T. Simons
This book is hard to describe. In terms of genre, it is both fantasy and well-researched historical fiction, which makes it a rather rare bird. The writing style falls somewhere between Austen and Gaiman and Dickens. The plot is somewhat rambling and disjoint, forsaking the standard quest narratives; in some ways it is a fantastic history of England, in some ways a tale of rescue. If it is anything, it is the story of the relationship between the two title characters, but one of them is not even introduced for two hundred pages.

. Unlike most of the better modern fantasy, this book is not a page-turner, and I mean that as a compliment; rather, it is a book to savor. Not that the plot isn't engaging - it is - but I frequently found myself comparing how many pages I'd read to how many I had left, deciding that I was burning through the book too quickly, and setting it down while I turned the passages I'd just read over in my head.

As befits a character-driven fantasy, almost all the characters are likeable, or at least understandable; even when they take larger-than-life action, they do so for incredibly human reasons. There are also a number of historical-character cameos, all of them well-drawn and believable..

I do not agree with Mr. Gaiman's statement that this is "the finest English novel of the fantasticke to appear in the past 70 years." Tolkien is better; his work has an epic grandeur that this book lacks, perhaps because Susanna Clarke so realistically and concretely evokes the precise historical era at which she aims : the imagination has a somewhat wider canvas to paint on when reading Tolkien or similar high fantasy, with more blank space to be filled in by the reader. Setting fantasy in a specific historical setting means that the magic stands out against the realistic elements, rather than dictating the whole scope and shape of the world, and readers who prefer their fantasy more total - who prefer to sink themselves into a wholly fantastic world - may prefer other books. (On the other hand, readers who prefer to sink themselves into specific historical eras, but still appreciate fantasy elements, will no doubt enjoy this book, especially the ways in which the author incorporates magical elements into the recorded historical happenings of the era, such as, for example, the battle of Waterloo). I would also argue that Mr. Gaiman's novels are "better," in that I personally prefer them slightly, if only because they tend to have a little more tension and action in them.

But on the whole this book is very, very good, and I recommend it highly to anyone who likes historical fiction, fantasy novels, or just quality writing and well-drawn, likeable characters. This is not, however, fantasy for the action-oriented, or for those who desire a bad guy or monster every few pages. This is a book to be read while sitting in a comfortable chair by a warm fire, something drinkable near at hand; a book to be quietly enjoyed.

... yet to complete it I know I would be satisfied. However
By D. Mitchell
The actual novel is very much to my liking and even though I am yet to complete it I know I would be satisfied. However, where as I only have praise for the author, the same cannot be said for the publisher. The paper back is 17cm*10.5cm*4.5cm and the font is tiny and printed too close to the spine. It is difficult to read this book seated on a couch and near impossible to read lying in bed. Apparently Tom Doherty Associates, LLC felt that reading a 1000 page book was not enough the had to make it a challenge.
If you get this book get the kindle edition or Bloomsbury Print.

Not a bad start to this series
By MinxFan
Not a bad start to this series, it was kinda boring though. I enjoyed Gabriel the most, he was snarky and seriously funny, I was hoping to experience the birth before this one ended, but that didn't happen. I have a very good idea who a lot of the future couples are though, so that will be interesting.

By Tina Brunelle (Redz)
Alpha Bourne is the first book in the Primal Heat Series by Lynn Hagen. I really liked how this series starts. There are a lot of characters I would like to get to know better in future books too. There is some political world building in this book too. I like that because we get to see how the pack works. Who does what and such.
The love story in play in this book is between Talyn Bourne the Alpha, well he has been an alpha for about year now. He wears the dog tags of his older brother who died serving his country. Talyn used to be young wild and free, now he knows his responsibilities. But he still has a little bad boy inside him too.
Gabriel Taylor is sent from another pack or coalition as they are called in this book. He is sent to get Talyn’s Omega. Talyn doesn’t want to give him or his Omega up. Especially when Talyn finds out that Gabriel is his mate.
Gabriel is funny, smart, little clumsy. I like his sass. He is stronger than he appears and very loyal too. His family will just make you laugh. I know I want to know more about the twins now. Those two will be hell on wheels to whomever they mate with.
Over all I really enjoyed this book. There is a great love story that had chemistry and drew me in. Also though there is a great story inside this book. With potential for more in the future. It is a very easy first book to understand, not too much thrown in to bog me down. I really loved it. I hope to read more in the future. MM, were wolves is my favorite genre so bring them on!

Alpha Bourne has started off another wonderful series from Lynn Hagen
By Virginia Lee
Alpha Bourne has started off another wonderful series from Lynn Hagen. This is the first book in the Primal Heat Series. Tayln has always been carefree and wild. When his brother dies, he must step up and take full responsible as Alpha. What does he do when another from a rival pack comes demanding his omega? Tayln does not feel that Gabriel is telling him everything about why he enter his land. What will the Alpha do with his mate and his half lies. Gabriel has no choice but to do what he must to protect his family, even his crazy cousin. I love this story and cannot waiting to see more of this series. Especially the crazy twins.

That's a pamphlet, not a book
By Byron Talbert
Seriously, it's a pamphlet, not a book. The "book" in a practical manner quickly introduces the reader to the ego states and a spattering of scenarios to equip the reader in his/her journey towards healthy autonomy. However, there are too few chunks to digest to accomplish such a goal. I would not have spent 99 cents had I known it was so brief in its content.
