For such a short book, there's a lot here.

This is one of those books that I really enjoyed, but I'm not sure I could tell you why. The structure defies logic and reason, yet it's critical to the narrative. The story primarily follows Billy Pilgrim, who is an interesting character though I never (not once) identified with him as a person. He's the ultimate observer -- coldly watching everything happening around him and commenting on it. Fortunately, for the reader, he witnesses some very interesting and horrifying events.

The presentation challenges the reader to come to some of their own conclusions about war and human nature. This is helped along by how cold the protagonist is because he doesn't seem to have an opinion of his own.

I self-identify as a Christian and, as such, I know Mr. Vonnegut and I do not agree on matters of faith. Even so, I found the subtle commentary on scripture throughout interesting. It didn't seem like I was being chastised for my beliefs, but there were small challenges that I can sift through and consider -- which I always appreciate.

If you're looking for a book that is going to mess with your head and leave you delightfully puzzled, this one is a good fit.

Lightly laugh until smiles perform but not to any indulgence of terror by means of a sadistic self, your despair ray is worn on your face for how do you explain the destruction of Dresden without writing a story about the war itself. The violence as an undercurrent, a shock of waking up in inexplicable worlds with children crusading as adults in foreign or universal visitations. The patient Billy Pilgrim, is a Wonderland character who is Vonnegut himself trying to deal with the theatre house where every mind unlocks not a secret to the inner workings just a dull dropping out the sensation of a psychedelic psychosis and how under pressure time travelling escapism relieves any of Billy's tortures. Fiction is the healer and fact an insurmountable torturous device of memory in domesticated paradise, just ask Valencia as she herself dies in an amusing paradoxical twist called fate whilst driving to Billy's head split bedside. Billy is always alone, never written lonely, so it goes...

Please read this at least once

I was a bit unsure at first about the way this novel was written: change in narration and story. I was confused about what this book was really about when it was still being introduced. When the story finally began I quickly let go of any doubt and began to understand it better. A simply yet beautifully written novel that made me late wherever I went because I was so engrossed in it and didn't want to put it down. More than everything I really loved the going back and forth in time. Left me wondering about certain events before my questions were answered but the new change in topic only gave me another set of impatient questions. So it goes.

Big Help for Funnel Plugin

I already used Piwik quite extensively, and so was familiar with how to set it up, goal tracking etc.

The reason I bought Jon's book was because the one BIG missing piece (from my perspective) from Piwik was Funnels, because I wanted to track site flow between pages on a new website of mine.

Looking in the Piwik Plugins repository, there is an experimental Funnels Plugin which I had tried to get working, but couldn't.

I did a search on Google for Piwik Funnels and saw an email that Jon had written which said that there was a video included with this course on how to setup the Funnels Plugin.

Bingo!

Wasn't very hopeful that this would solve the problems I was having, but for a few bucks I was willing to take the risk.

Anyhow, just got access to the videos (the funnels one is under "Piwik Advanced" on the left) and watched the Funnels one.

Solved the problem. Was a dumb naming issue which Jons video solved.

Normally I would mention the fix. But honestly. For the few bucks Jon is selling this for he deserves the sales.

Kissmetrics charge $30 a month for what the funnel plugin does.

Anyhow, bottom line. This course does exactly what it says on the tin.

Very thorough and easy to follow

This analytics program was not one I was familiar with. Like the author, I don't like Google knowing all my business so anything I can implement that takes their prying eyes away, I'm all for it.

Jon did a good job describing what the software does and what it tracks, which sold me on using it. The rest of the book details exactly how to install it and set it up to track and show what you want it to. It is very detailed, with pictures for illustration, so that anyone can do this on their own. I'm glad I have it as a guide to follow when I install it.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who has a website that they want to know where their traffic is coming from.

great reference

This book is a very good general reference on aluminum alloys. Some of the material is a little outdated, but for the most part it's a good background book on characteristics of most aluminum alloys, mechanical properties, and physical metallurgy - pretty much just what the title says. There's not a whole lot of detail on mechanical behavior, but there are sweeping generalizations (I mean that in a useful way) that are usually enough to get you started on whatever you are investigating.

This book is an excellent reference for aluminum alloys, especially for a metallurgist dealing with aluminum. There's a good bit of simple, but very useful, data in this book on common alloys like 2024 and 7075 that isn't well known or documented elsewhere. Examples are effect of delays on natural aging of 7075 and quench rates equivalent graphs between bar and plate. I was referencing the bits and pieces of this book available as a Google Books preview for a long time before I ended up buying it.

About the Author
Doug Newsom, Ph.D., APR and Fellow Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) is a Texas Christian University professor emerita of The Schieffer School of Journalism and the senior co-author of THIS IS PR AND PUBLIC RELATIONS WRITING. She also is the co-author of three other books and the author of another two, as well as the author of four current book chapters. She is former member of the Commission on Public Relations Education, former chair of PRSA's College of Fellows and is a past chair of the Accrediting Committee for the Accrediting Council on Education for Journalism and Mass Communications. She has been president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, Southwest Education Council for Journalism and Mass Communication, Texas Public Relations Association, and both the Dallas and Fort Worth chapters of PRSA. Dr. Newsom has been national faculty advisor to PRSSA. She has been head of the PR Division of AEJMC and served as chair of its former division heads. Awards include the Institute for Public Relations' Pathfinder, PRSA Outstanding Educator, Public Relations Foundation of Texas's Educator of the Year Award, Texas Public Relations Association's Golden Spur, the Association for Women in Communications Headliner, and in 2010 she was named to the Hall of Excellence of TCU's Schieffer School of Journalism. She has served Fulbright teaching appointments in India and Singapore; given workshops in South Africa, Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland and Vanuatu; and taught in Latvia and England. She has been chair of the Fulbright discipline committee, served 18 years on a gas research institute's advisory council and was one of the first women elected to the board of a publicly held company, she was the first woman elected to the board of ONEOK where she served 24 years until reaching mandatory retirement age. Currently, her volunteer public relations work is for Rotary International.

Jim Haynes is the director of research, senior consultant and a member of the Board of Directors of QuickSilver Interactive Group, Inc. of Dallas, Texas. He also is an adjunct professor at UNT, where he teaches public relations writing. Accredited in Public Relations (APR), he is a member of Public Relations Society of America's College of Fellows and is a Certified Records Manager. He served on the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) national Board of Directors and the Universal Accreditation Board, responsible for accreditation for Public Relations Society of America PRSA and eight other participating organizations. Former assistant dean in the College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin he taught public relations there and at the University of North Texas, Texas State University-San Marcos, Southern Methodist University and Texas Christian University. He has spoken at professional conferences and led seminars and workshops throughout the US, Canada, England and Norway. Co-founder of the Public Relations Foundation of Texas, he served as chairman of that organization as well as president of the Texas Public Relations Association (TPRA) and the North Texas (now Dallas) Chapter of PRSA. He has received numerous national, state and local awards from public relations organizations, including lifetime membership in TPRA. Through Jim Haynes Consulting, he provides consulting services to clients that have included major corporations throughout the United States, as well as associations, municipalities, state agencies and non-profit organizations in the US, Canada, Norway and Sweden. Tina Rae Collins is an internationally known, award-winning author who has published fifteen previous books, including a novel, four juvenile novels, a fable, two poetry books, a religious book for women and one for children, a collection of religious articles, a doctrinal book about the end times (The Gathering in the Last Days), a biography of her son Aaron (Aaron Collins Did That), her master's thesis (Snow White: The Story of Eve's Redemption), and her doctoral dissertation (We Are Emmanuel: How Man Became God). She received a bachelor's degree in English from Pikeville College and a master's degree in Theology and PhD in Biblical Studies from Northwestern Theological Seminary. She resides in Lexington, Kentucky, and her greatest personal blessing is spending time with and enjoying her family.

This book is a 10! We loved it!

“When the student is ready, the teacher will appear” certainly applies to my encounter with this book!

The Judaeo-Christian Myth by Tina Rae Collins is an important challenge to the stories and assumptions of the Jewish scribes and early Christian authors whose writings ended up in the Christian Bible. Whether we agree or not with the premise, I commend Tina Rae Collins for her courage, her clear and concise writing, her fair use of sacred writings, and her extensive Bibliography.

Growing up in a fundamentalist Christian church we didn’t dare believe that the stories in our Bible were anything but gospel truth. So when I got into ministerial training, and we learned that ancient cultures had many stories of similar miracles that predated the Jewish prophets or the Christian interpreters by hundreds, even thousands of years . . . what would you say?

Were those older stories of almost identical miracles from other nations and other religions just copied into what became our Bible?

Precisely what, you ask, would young ministerial students say, with girlfriends and wives (may they never meet!) to support? What would the professors at our private church affiliated university say? Our response to such hard questions must certainly sound familiar . . . we just told each other, as the early Christian leaders did for two thousand years . . . that those older stories simply couldn’t be the “real truth,” but were nothing more than the crafty work of the devil, designed to trick unwary Christians. That answer was just what we wanted to hear! And it was good enough. For awhile.

Then years piled up, and some of those literal views began to unravel. I’ll be honest: a few of them just self-destructed on their own.

It’s just me and my college girlfriend (my wife for 40 years) at home now, our kids are gone, and we’re wondering, what do we tell them? Should we order copies of this important book, let them read it, and trust them to handle it without parental supervision?

Our world is tearing itself apart because three main religious groups, the religions of Abraham, took those stories literally.

I’m not trying to dodge the bullet here. As a child of my time, I’m willing to stand up and say, yes, we got some things wrong, but thankfully, we got a few things right.

So I’m not going to stand by and kick the can down the street for another generation. I’ll be bold here, and state a wish: if adherents to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam would read and understand the background of their own sacred texts, I think the world would be a safer place. And just maybe, those great redemptive stories will once again be appreciated for what they are, and the bloodshed will finally end.

This book is adult reading. Tough questions deserve honest answers. It was painful at times, yet liberating. Tina Rae Collins states in this book that she published it as a follow up to her dissertation, which I also purchased and read. A quick look at the Bibliography shows about 600 (six hundred) references, give or take. When we are ready, those resources await.

As Tina so gently reminds us . . . we’ve known these things for a long time.

Remember holding your kids on your shoulders, so they could see even further than you could? Remember asking them what they could see—when you couldn’t know for sure what they were seeing, but you knew, without question, they were telling you the truth?

This book is a 10, two thumbs up, five stars.

Though this type of material can be difficult and provocative for the uninitiated, Collins presents it in an extremely accessible and informative manner and in eminently readable prose which is free of the kind of vitriol which can sometimes manifest in this genre when sacred cows are being sacrificed on the altar of rational thought. I highly recommend this work to anyone interested in a sober examination of the origins of Judeo-Christian thought, practice, and tradition.
