controversial, heavy at times, but v good

The book is controversial. In part, this is because not many complete texts exist. In part, it is because Assyriology is studied by only a few people (all of whom know each other on first-surname terms). Sumerian is a tiny, tiny, nearly infinitesimal fraction of that. Divide a few by a lot and it's easy to see why there's a problem.

This means that all books on Sumerology will make assumptions that you should be wary of. Some more than others, as some aspects are better studied. You do not need to know the nuances of Sumerian to translate the poems and stories of Inanna, or the epic of Gilgamish, but obviously the more you know the richer the translations can be without silly mistakes.

As a guide to one of the paths Sumerologists have explored, this book is great. It has a lot of detail, key information on writing styles, the grammar, etc. It goes into all this in intense depth, so make a backup copy of your brain first.

It is not "the definitive guide" because there isn't one. It is one interpretation of the extant data, there are other books that are equally valid interpretations of the same data which differ on many points. No matter what you get, keep an open mind. If you get this with an eye to becoming an archaeologist in that region, be prepared to write the next edition.

This is exactly where hobbyists like myself need to start, presuming of course you already know Akkadian. This manual will not, however, complete your knowledge of sumerian, but is a very good introduction in terms of both Grammar and orthography. It's deductive method of explaining morphology and syntax in the contexts actual tablets or inscriptions is a very good hands-on learning experience, and it's commentary is very elaborate in explaining it's various points. Once you have read, reviewed and memorized the grammar, one should then move on to D. Otto Edzard's "Sumerian" grammar.

A Splendid Introduction to Sumerian

In the Manual of Sumerian, Hayes starts you off with a good introduction to what you're getting yourself into, in terms of signs, in terms of grammar and in terms of studying a language that is not fully understood even by its finest scholars. Once you hop into the lessons, though, the language comes fast. Other reviewers have noted how often you find yourself reading the same sentence, but given that the texts are drawn mostly from inscriptions this is hardly a surprise. It's not as though building cornerstones are generally used for avant-garde literature. However, there's something reassuring in this. It's genuinely neat to be four or five chapters in, flip ahead a little and discover you have some sense of what the text is about, even though you can also tell that you'd really better do the chapters in the middle to fill in the gaps.

The one warning to give about this text is that with relatively limited content, you won't be learning the whole of the language. You'll be learning, as I indicated, to read standard inscriptions. If you're wandering about a Sumerian site and find an as yet unnoticed brick, you'll have a good shot at understanding whether it came from a a temple, a bridge or a palace, who ordered its construction and which god it was dedicated to. If you find a tablet with a missing part of an old Gilgamesh story, you're going to need some help. That said, this is a wonderful introduction, all the more wonderful because you get both a lot of insight into the language and the experience of looking at ancient inscriptions and knowing, almost at a glance, what they're about.

For anyone who wants to find out what Sumerian is all about, I would highly recommend this as the place to start.

Beautiful art with historical significance

This book now becomes the main source for top-quality representations of the shrine and temple paintings of Dunhuang. In the early Middle Ages, Dunhuang was a major center on the Silk Road, and became a huge focus for religious activity, mostly Buddhist but also Daoist and other. The caves were then abandoned and sealed, to be rediscovered, entered, and explored in the 19th and 20th centuries. Much of the art was carried off, but the walls remained, and the head of the Dunhuang Institute here very ably introduces them and gives the history and meaning of the art. One interesting aspect is the physical variety of local people: the portraits show a wide range of physical types, from Russian-like to Persian, Turkic and Chinese. Every lover of Asian art should have this book.

Both paintings and sculptures are beautifully photographed. And the text offers descriptions of the legends and happenings portrayed in the narrative paintings.

I hope to visit Dunhuang, and this is just what I need to be prepared to appreciate this ancient cave art. But I can also see buying this book as a coffee table book, if you're interested in the art of the Silk Road.

There is an excellent introduction on the history of the caves and their architecture and a chapter on conservation activities in the caves. The author is a thorough expert in the field, and a clear and interesting writer.

Highly recommended for art lovers.

I liked this book because it really is everything I thought it might be. The text is great and easy to read and the photos are excellent. One of the best books out on Buddhist caves in China. Highly recommended!

About the Author
Ian Loader is Professor of Criminology and Director of the Centre for Criminology at the University of Oxford. He is the author of Policing and the Condition of England (with A. Mulcahy, 2003) and Crime and Social Change in Middle England (with E. Girling and R. Sparks, 2000) and an editor of the British Journal of Criminology. Ian is a leading authority on contemporary transformations in policing and security.

Neil Walker is Professor of European Law in the Department of Law at the European University Institute, Florence. He has made well-known contributions to questions of transnational constitutional theory as well as to the study of policing and security. He has recently edited Europe's Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (2004) and Relocating Sovereignty (2006).

The Romans’ destruction of Carthage after the Third Punic War erased any Carthaginian historical record of Hannibal’s life. What we know of him comes exclusively from Roman historians who had every interest in minimizing his success, exaggerating his failures, and disparaging his character. The charges leveled against Hannibal include greed, cruelty and atrocity, sexual indulgence, and even cannibalism. But even these sources were forced to grudgingly admit to Hannibal’s military genius, if only to make their eventual victory over him appear greater.

Yet there is no doubt that Hannibal was the greatest Carthaginian general of the Second Punic War. When he did not defeat them outright, he fought to a standstill the best generals Rome produced, and he sustained his army in the field for sixteen long years without mutiny or desertion. Hannibal was a first-rate tactician, only a somewhat lesser strategist, and the greatest enemy Rome ever faced. When he at last met defeat at the hands of the Roman general Scipio, it was against an experienced officer who had to strengthen and reconfigure the Roman legion and invent mobile tactics in order to succeed. Even so, Scipio’s victory at Zama was against an army that was a shadow of its former self. The battle could easily have gone the other way. If it had, the history of the West would have been changed in ways that can only be imagined. Richard A. About the Author
RICHARD A. GABRIEL is a distinguished professor in the Department of History and War Studies at the Royal Military College of Canada and in the Department of Defence Studies at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto. He is a former U.S. Army officer and the author of more than forty books, including Scipio Africanus, Thutmose III, Philip II of Macedonia, Hannibal, and Man and Wound in the Ancient World. If you've been studying ancient warfare this is for you.

Hannibal is a great book. It is not however an easy read. If you haven't already been studying ancient warfare in some fashion, this book will probably be over your head. Gabriel is a brilliant man. I've been a big fan of his from The History channels "Battles BC". So if your already been studying ancient history. I would highly recommend.

Why does the adage "He who wins the battles, wins the war," not work for Hannibal?

Good book by Professor Gabriel on Hannibal, who won all his battles (except the next to last, Zama, and his last as a navel commander for King Prusias of Bithynia- Hannibal was a field commander, not a navel commander) and lost the war with Rome. Why does the adage "He who wins the battles, wins the war," not work for Hannibal in the Carthaginians Second Punic War against Rome?

On page 218: "Hannibal failed because his operational victories did not achieve his strategic objectives. After Cannae, the strategic ground shifted beneath his feet, reducing a man who had once been the king of the battlefield to little more than a sacrificial pawn in a much larger game that he never really understood."

Also important is a footnote to Chapter 9. "Why Hannibal Failed," from the text page 212, footnote 2 (on page 248 in the text):
"My old friend and colleague the late Col. Harry Summers used to tell the story of his assignment to the negotiations in Hanoi between the North Vietnamese and the Americans in an effort to end the war. In a conversation with a North Vietnamese colonel, Summers remarked, 'Well, whatever the outcome, you never defeated us on the battlefield.' The North Vietnamese colonel smiled and said, 'That is true. But it is also irrelevant!'"

And so it was with Hannibal against the Romans, until the end at Zama and Scipio Africanus.

Gabriel is thorough in his assessment, referencing his statements extensively to both primary ancient sources and secondary contemporary researchers. It provides insight into Hannibal's childhood and his Italian campaign. An excellent overview of the life of an extraordinary man.
