More like a 213-page journal article than a textbook

Mirman's book expands on the sort of discussion that is found in Chapter 2 of Weinberg's The Quantum Theory of Fields, Volume 1: Foundations, in which the differences between the representations of massive particles (like the electron) and massless particles (like the photon) are elucidated. The problem, with this book, however, is that the notation used (e.g. the Lorentz generators of the Poincare group on p.15) is often not defined within the confines of this book. Instead the reader is directed to other difficult to obtain books or journal articles (e.g. Kim and Noz Theory and Applications of the Poincar� Group (Fundamental Theories of Physics)) for these definitions. Such an approach to defining essential features such as notation is what you might expect from journal articles--though even most review articles define basic notation. Nevertheless, Mirman deserves credit for presenting the reader with helpful intuitive insights that are expressed verbally rather than being couched solely in equations. For example, the equation-free discussion of Section 3.6 (pp.49-50), "How are massless representations obtained from massive ones," is both brief and insightful.

I considered myself an introverted computer scientist. I ordered this and Carducci's book at the same time, looking forward more to Carducci's book. Fortunately this book arrived first, so I gave it a chance.

Don't misconstrue the title; it is not at all a book on manipulating others.

The first chapter --the introduction-- reads like an annoying motor-mouth oratory from Joan Rivers. Persist. Don't be concerned about how you're going to hold an entire book's worth of advice in your head while conversing because you won't need to; it pertains more to pre-schmooze preparation. (In contrast, Carducci's book focuses more on real-time details of conversation.) I've only read through chapter three and have not had time to get to the rest of it because I've been socializing! I kid you not! Sound too good to be true? Bet you don't have as many doubts as I did. Try it. Some of the later chapters are on special situations (airplanes, trade shows, e-mail, etcetera); paging through those I found some pearls, so I look forward to finishing it.

These are light, easy tips that analytical left-brain guys can follow. I read that the author also teaches seminars, but who needs that? Just get the book. You are already on the right track for considering it. There is probably a LOT less "wrong" with you than you might think, and this book is a fast, easy way to become the more sociable person that you want to become.

Amazingly, there is virtually no overlap between this book and Carducci's. Carducci's book is more aimed at micro-details of what to talk about, very elementary. I think the best book in this category is "Lifeskills for Adult Children" by the late Janet Woititz and Alan Garner; it begins with an excellent section on starting and maintaining conversations.

This book is light reading. Try it!

This book lacks the implementation details for the suggested ideas. I felt like I was at a lecture about how to socialize where only high level common sense ideas are presented, but the true nitty-gritty details are ignored. The author has good intentions, but I didn't get much out of this book.

About the Author
HENRY WINTERFELD (1901-1990) was born in Germany. He began writing for children in 1933, when he wrote Trouble at Timpetill to entertain his son, who was sick with scarlet fever. He went on to write a number of children's books, which have been published around the world.

This was one of my favorite books as a child.

Growing up on the coast of Maine, I had the opportunity to meet and know Mr. Winterfeld. My first exposure to him was when he came to my fourth grade class to read "Stargirl" to us. I didn't know how lucky I was at the time, but as I matured and spoke with Mr. Winterfeld more often, I realized just how special this man was. I remember being saddened when he passed away, and when I began purchasing his books for the little people in my life, I remember that he passed away owing me a chess game. "Timpetill" held quite a fantasy for me - an entire population of town's children, left by frustrated parents, to deal with their problems and behaviors by themselves. The town's children dividing into two factions, and how and when the parents decide to return. I had often though as a child what that might have been like, small town Maine and no parents to govern us. I highly recommend this book for the younger person in your life.

Why should you never tie an alarm clock to a cat's tail? Because it might lead you on the wildest and scariest adventure of your life!
In the little town of Timpetill, the kids are so spoiled and rotten and horrid that finally the parents, nearly exploding with exasperation, simply leave the town. When the kids wake up the next morning, they find their moms and dads missing, and the electricity and the water turned off. But to the Pirates - the gang of the very worst kids in Timpetill - that's just fine. They immediately raid the town, plundering the shops. They stuff their faces full of chocolate from the candy store and try on all the dresses in the dress shop. The town is a mess - stuff is scattered everywhere. It's up to Michael, also known as "Professor," along with is cousin Marianne and best friend Thomas, to take control of the town. Gradually, they maintain order, and more and more of the Pirates drift over onto their side. They assign jobs to each person and use only as much food as they need. But can they defeat the remaining Pirates? Will they ever take control of Oscar, the gang's leader? And will their parents EVER come back? Find out in this witty, engrossing tale from Henry Winterfeld.

I am a 69 year old baby boomer. This was one of my favourite books as a child of about 11-12. I read it and re-read it. It is a really great read for all kids of this age group, and I still think about it today.

Worth the read.

I saw the author on the Glenn Beck program not long ago as he discussed the Pendulum theory on Beck’s ‘The Vault.’ I found his presentation interesting enough that I wanted to read the book. I feel that his pendulum theory is mostly accurate, which explains our experience of déjà vu every few decades. Over the last few years, people have become quite reminiscent of the WWII era, even if we weren’t alive during that era – there is something in the air that *feels* like that time. After reading the book, I know what it is – the WE era.

I can’t say that the book made me feel better about my life because it certainly didn’t. I’m 40 years old and the future looks rather bleak for me on most levels, but my children will fare much better and that gives me relief. Now, I must give them an idea of what lies ahead for them so they can be better prepared than I was for a societal shift. I’d like to thank the author for putting this out there. It’s great information to have and hopefully it will combat what is to come.

Onto the writing and structure of the book. I think it could have been laid out better. I like a more organized feel when reading a book of this nature. If I were the authors, I would have left out the pictures and diagrams, as they do not translate well on Kindle.

Great book - While it is written as a guide ...

Great book - While it is written as a guide to best designing advertisments (and it does a great job doing that) this book is a must read for anyone who is making business decisions, organizational leadership or any one who likes to follow trends. It was a quick read and I even picked up some historical tidbits that I didn't know. Again it is an ad book, but it covers politics, religion, business, marketing and just about every facet of our lives. I have passed it on to several other people to read.

A very nice version of a classic story

Having bought other stories in the same series, I got the Three little Pigs in the Keepsake Classic series as well and I am not disappointed. I like the illustrations alot and the fact that the wolf is kinda drawn in a goofy, non-scary way. I think it is a really good version.....the only thing I found odd were the first 2 pages where the 3 pigs go out on their own...there is no explanation exactly what they mean but there is a picture of what looks like their parents saying good bye and waving a hankie ..I am sure this is to explain why exactly these 3 pigs even NEED to make a house each.... but it doesn't really cut it.....My 3 year old asked me WHY they had to go away and leave their Mommy and I said " Cuz they are all grown up"....I don't know - I guess what I am trying to say is that maybe the story line could have explained this alittle better to go with the illustration...saying something about 3 little pigs who grew up to be big and strong and one day decided to make houses all their very own...I know its a kids book but still I found the first 2 pages kinda lame...a couple more sentences would have sufficed to exaplin exactly why all of asudden these three pigs were walking away joyfully from their parents who seem sad and are waving hankies...KWIM?
Other then that, I thought it was very nicely done.....

Nice-not so scary for younger children

This is a nice rendition of a favorite story.
The pictures of the wolf are not so scary.
The pigs are also cute. Our two year old
would be scared if the characters looked
mean or threatening. The wolf even jumps
out of the boiling pot and runs away in the
end. Very nice.
