Great book to read when you need rabbinical guidance

I know Rabbi Zelig has written other books since this 1983 one, and I can't help wondering if most of his later books are "updated" snippets from this book. I'd appreciate any feedback from other owners of multiple Zelig books, if anyone can answer this question for me. The only negative comment I can make is that over the 25 yrs I've read and carefully handled this poorly-bound paperback, most of the pages have come unglued from the paper cover, and I must keep the book in a plastic Ziploc bag now. Definitely worth purchasing the hardcover version for a few extra bucks!

The best book on happiness.

I think this is the most comprehensive book on happiness I've ever read. Rabbi Pliskin has chapters dealing with everything you could imagine that could rob you of your happiness. He has chapters dealing with worry, sadness, friendship, living in the present, anger, guilt, suffering, preventing problems, envy, desires, grief, discouragement and many more.
The most incredible components of this book and the segments that make it great are the first four chapters. They are Chapter 1: Happiness is an obligation, Chapter 2: Appreciating what you have, Chapter 3: Happiness is dependent on your thoughts, and Chapter 4: Peace of mind. These four chapters include the best thinking and teaching explanations on happiness.

About the Author
Bo H. Jonsson, M.D., Ph.D., has been a practicing psychiatrist for thirty years. He is affiliated with the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, section of Psychiatry, Karolinska Institute and is medical director of Center for Affective disorders, Northern Stockholm Psychiatry, St G�ran's Hospital, Stockholm. Dr. Jonsson is on the editorial board of the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine and is president of the Swedish Society for Orthomolecular Medicine.

Andrew W. Saul was known as "The Juicer" when he taught Clinical Nutrition at New York Chiropractic College and postgraduate continuing education programs. He was also on the faculty of the State University of New York for nine years. Two of those years were spent teaching for the University in both women's and men's penitentiaries (no, not as an inmate). He also taught every grade there is in the Rochester-area parochial and public schools. Dr. Saul is the author or coauthor of eleven books, including Doctor Yourself: Natural Healing That Works (now in its second edition) and Fire Your Doctor. He has published over 150 papers in peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Saul is internationally known for his website, and his featured appearance in the documentary movie FoodMatters.

Vitamin therapy for depression: What your doctor never learned in med school

If you suffer from depression, you have the right to know ALL helpful information that can get you feeling better. Safe and effective ways to manage depression with nutrition should be something every physician discusses with their patients before the prescription pad comes out. Often, this is not the case.

There is no truly effective, long-term drug therapy for depression. Indeed, drugs can be relied upon to make depression worse in a majority of people subjected to them. Psychiatrist Abram Hoffer, M.D., Ph.D., said, "Drugs make a well person sick. Why would they make a sick person well?" According to this book, drug-only cure rates are about 10 percent. Optimum nutritional therapy (orthomolecular medicine) and related measures are effective 80 percent of the time.

The senior author of this book is an experienced psychiatrist who is head of the Center for Affective Disorders at a major hospital in Stockholm. He was also educated and worked at the Karolinska Institute, and holds both PhD and MD degrees. Perhaps medical education in Sweden is more advanced than in the USA, or maybe the drug companies have less of a grip on healthcare. Either way, this book is the only depression book I have seen that really focuses on high-dose vitamin and other nutritional therapy. It is desperately needed information.

Nutritional treatments for depression, say the authors, "are remarkably simple, safe, and easy to try. This does not mean that nutrition and depression and medicine are simple subjects. You do not need to know it all to get good results. Automobiles are very complex, yet you do not even need a high school diploma to operate one safely and efficiently. The human body is unbelievably complex, yet there are certain key areas of opportunity that are straightforward and doable. The odd thing is that so many people suffering from depression have never been encouraged, or even informed, about nutritional (orthomolecular) medicine. We'd like to fix that right now."

This book is good news for everyone that has depression, or has a family member or friend with depression. It is very well referenced with up-to-date citations to the latest medical research . . .the latest NUTRITIONAL medical research. The research your doctor has not told you about . . . because your doctor has never seen it. Reading this book can help to change that. I highly recommend it.

This book is the most valuable book I own.

I have read and re-read this book from cover to cover. My wife is suffering with depression. I have already been able to see her improvement from the information I gained from this book. This book should be in every home as well as in every doctors office. If you or a loved one is depressed or have a history of depression you should own this book. Your body is not suffering from anti depressant drugs,but from vitimans, minerals and herbs.

Must Read Crime Story

This crime short story is an easy read with likable characters. If you want to be entertained, then this is the short story for you! Mr. West pulls you in at page one, you immediately bond with Ryan as he learns his fate with the firm. The dialogue between friends throughout the book is humorous as they attempt to solve the mystery, while keeping each other out of trouble. I didn't want it to end ... I hope there are more books in the series, this is definitely a WINNER!!!

Must Read!

If you like funny crime short stories, you should definitely get this one. I
laughed at these characters all the way along as they bumble around to keep one
of them from facing a murder charge. It's a really good buddy story involving
hilarious amateurish but effective detective work. Very enjoyable.

The Next John Grisham

The Massive Hole Theory is a quick, fun read! As a former law firm lawyer, I could really relate to the main character. Everyone who has ever been frustrated with their bosses can relate to Ryan's thoughts and put themselves in his shoes when his venting gets him into trouble. Unlike some mysteries, the real killer is not obvious and the ending is satisfying. I think Michael West is the next John Grisham. Looking forward to the next one!

John Osarenren, received his PHd in agricultural engineering in 1989 from the Byelorussian University of Agricultural Mechanization, in Minsk, USSR, and his M.SC. (Agricultural Engineering) in 1986. The book introduces and explains the concept of the transfer of Technology Inheritance (TI) across the life cycle of industrial plant. Since every item of equipment is manufactured, each step in the manufacturing process of the equipment's parts embeds a signature of itself in the equipment that affects the equipment's subsequent use. The problem or defect created when a manufacturing step goes wrong is transferred into the part and to the future operation of the equipment. Each error or adverse consequence event done to a component produces a risk of future production failures under certain circumstances.

The book provides and explains a process called 'Integrated Reliability Condition Monitoring and Maintenance' (IRCMM) that monitors and tracks the various processes used on a component during its life cycle for risks of defect creation. Where a risk arises the causes of a defect can be identified and addressed in order to get maximum reliability during the service life of the asset.

The book contains many useful insights into the risks and hazards caused by component manufacturing to the use of the final equipment in a production plant. There is a large amount of math used to explain the foundation concepts of IRCMM. Many of the concepts related to TI are novel and the explanations are challenging to read and understand.

Regardless of the difficulties in understanding the technicalities and the math behind measuring the effects of TI, the book soundly explains why manufacturing and maintenance processes cause latent plant and equipment reliability problems. IRCMM gives you a new way to predict and quantity the risk to production operations from all the events that happened during the life cycle of a production asset.

EXCELLENT C++/OOP book

This book is super easy to read compared to every other prog/tech book I've ever read...(well maybe aside from Petzold). It feels like a lot of attention/effort was given to patiently and thoroughly cover each topic. And consequently it's worth every penny.
The emphasis is on solving reasonable real world problems with solid OOP techniques. The author's evaluation of several different possible solutions for each problem really helps to show you not just the 'how's but the 'why's of what makes good design. Unlike the last sentence, this book is EXTREMELY clearly written :-).
In a nutshell, this book is like a master's guide to the holy grail of expert C++ development. Loved it!

Great for someone with C experience, looking to learn C++

I picked up the book with a basic foundation in C programming in a professional Win32 environment, and was looking to expand my knowledge of C++. I never had any formal training in C++, and was able to grasp all of the concepts presented. After reading I was able to quickly pick up and understand ATL and MFC with little trouble at all.
This book is great for those "theory" people who want to understand how to use the language, not just copy and paste code from a book.
I wouldn't recommend this book to someone who has no experience with C or C++. A basic understanding of C is a minimum requirement.

A good book that is marred by a couple of things... 1. The presentation and print quality are absolutely terrible. 2. There are NUMEROUS bugs in the example code. Still, better than most of the books I've read, proving useful to both beginners and more experienced coders.

An exceptional primer

Out of all the books written about nations and nationalism in the past 20 or so years, this Alter's "Nationalism" has to be one of the best for use as a primary text or starting point. It is both concise and comprehensive in its analysis of the rise of nationalism as a political force first in Europe and then the rest of the world. The basic typology Alter uses is simple yet engenders a better understanding of the nationalism phenomenon. Alter's basic, and very plausible, thesis to explain nationalism's rise anywhere in the world is quite simple: generally some form of political, social or economic crisis (whether real or perceived) generally provides the impulse for peoples and their leaders to resort to and accept the particularly powerful political mythology offered by nationalism. Another very important aspect of this book is Alter's emphasis on the ease with which nationalism is merged with other political ideologies, left or right, radical or conservative, to create a very potent instrument for gaining and sustaining mass support by politicians, political parties and movements. His general conclusion is that nationalism is hardly a spent force, even if nation-states, usually the objective of nationalist movements, are beginning to be perceived as politically obsolete. In reading this book, one can see that nationalism may simply acquire different forms and different modes as the world economy and society become more globalized.

The basics on nationalism

Alters book provides a short but thorough introduction on nationalism. Alters book is especially interesting to students who are interested in 19th and 20th century poltical history.
Alter is a historian. His book deals -not surprising- with the history of nationalism. Strong emphasis is put on the differences between variants of nationalism that occured in (European) history during the last centuries. This makes the book rather encyclopedic. After having read the book it was clear what different types of nationalism there are, what nations are and how they use and need nationalism. But -like an encyclopedia- the book is rather dull to read. The reader may not miss a single line in order to keep up with the density of the information. And that is difficult if English is not your mother tongue.
I read Alters book because my university teacher of political science had put this book on the list of compulsory books. The good thing about the book is that it made clear what nationalism is. (by emphasizing on the differences between the various forms of it) The bad part is that it deals -for a too great part- with definitions.
Finally: Being a citizen of the Netherlands I would like to give a nationalistic comment on an inaccuracy in the book. The mother tongue of the Flemish (who live in the northern half of Belgium) is Flemish. The dictionary the Flemish use is the Dutch dictionary. Flemish is not, as Alter incorrectly states, considered a language. Flemish is a variant of Dutch. Who would argue that Austrians speak Austrian instead of German?
Apart from this little mistake, Alters book is factually correct. (That's what my professors and fellow students said at least) If you're studying Palmer and Colton's History of the World or a similar book, then Alters 150 pages on nationalism will provide you a deeper insight.
