A peaceful coexistence with the few white explorers, trappers, and missionaries abruptly ended in 1860 when the discovery of gold precipitated a rush of thousands to north central Idaho. Somewhat crazed by the dreams of instant wealth, the adventurers took little heed that they were invading the Indians' land and breaking U.S. treaties. Among the accounts is a rare Nez Perce description by Sam Lott (Many Wounds) of the 1862 murder of two Nez Perce by white miners. Dennis Baird and his colleagues scoured the country and collected the existing firsthand accounts of that time of very rapid change. White officials, officers, missionaries, and journalists were lucid, compassionate, and surprisingly in favor of the Nez Perce. However, the prevailing national attitude toward Indians supported the wholesale "taking" of Indian land, which led to the disastrous Nez Perce Treaty of 1863 and greatly downsized their reservation.

Story of a girl who never wanted to marry but still happily became "The Malhotra Bride"!

Sunita is just twenty and bubbling with excitement to start her dream life of a career woman where she is free and self independent. But her parents have different ideas. They want her married as soon as possible. Her father her even set his eyes on a most suitable match for her. The only son of the illustrious Malhotra family, who own the Malhotra garments, Akshay is his choice. Despite Sunita's objections, a date is set for the two families to meet and Sunita is told to be ready.

What will Sunita do?

She doesnt want to get married so soon. She wants to be someone. Stand on her own feet. But this is not the trend in her house. Gokul Rishi, her father, "was a very strict father and strongly believed that women should be occasionally seen and never heard." Ever since her childhood, Sunita had to fight for every single thing in her life and her ally in all these conquests was her grandfather. This time, however, even her grandfather is helpless and she is on her own.

Akshay on the other hand is also against an arranged marriage and feels that his current life of "work hard and play harder" is working quite well without the added stress of marriage. A billionaire with killer looks, girls have always been abundant but still he agrees to meet the girl and see for himself.

What happens when these two very different people meet is the story behind The Malhotra Bride.
Will sparks fly or will there be a disastrous fire?
How will Sunita rid herself of Akshay and follow her life as she wishes?

A clean and sweet love story of a girl who wants to be free to live her life as she wishes but is forced to conform to age old traditions is very beautifully and interestingly narrated by Sundari in her new book, The Malhotra Bride.

The characterization is expertly done and each character plays its part to perfection. Sunita is headstrong as well as innocent in many ways. She craves the love of her parents and often does things she doesn't agree to just to please them. Her parents, Gokul and Leela are as conservative as they come. Gokul is strict and often behaves like he is superior to his wife and daughters just because he is a man. Leela has adapted her life as per her husband's wishes and does anything in her power to comply to him even when she doesn't agree to his actions. Sandhya, Sunita's elder sister, is her opposite in every way. She is happy to conform to all traditions and even got married at her parent's bidding at the tender age of eighteen. Then there is her grandfather who is quite practical and modern in his outlook and has always supported Sunita in her attempts at getting a degree and living her life as per her wishes. Akshay is our modern guy but still very respectful towards his parents and although educated abroad, cherishes his culture. Akshay's parents are modern day, practical parents who don't believe that a woman's place is in the kitchen and Mr. Malhotra has always encouraged his wife to stand on her own feet and live as she wants.

There are varied characters here and it is quite interesting to study them. I could empathize with Sunita and feel her helplessness. Even though its the twenty first century and people act all modern but still there are some who are still stuck in the age old version of traditions that give men more power over women. They don't want to move on with time and often force their family also to comply with them. Gokul's character is one such reflection of such people. Meanwhile Akshay's family stands for the practical minded people who value their family's happiness over traditions and are willing to change with time.

The scenes with Sunita and Akshay were warm, happy and fun moments where I definitely felt that true love originates from friendship. People become friends first before becoming lovers. The writing style of Sundari is simple yet very captivating and she is able to hold the reader and keep him engrossed in the story till the very end.

I loved this breezy love story which will connect with you instantly and you will feel like it is your own story or a story of a known person in your life. A story that is heart touching and which will leave you feeling happy and warm, I give The Malhotra Bride a 4 out of 5 and recommend that you read this sweet story of a girl who never wanted to marry but still happily became The Malhotra Bride!

Interesting idea spirals into debauchery - waste of time

It has a fun premise but is severely underdeveloped. The character lack depth and don't make sense. The sex at the end is a disappointing turn. A girl brought up strictly suddenly becomes a sexpot? An ambitious man with goals and a playboy history suddenly loses his mind at the sight of a beautiful girl? What started as a fun idea quickly turned into a muddled mess and ends in a cesspool of lust solely for the sake of titillation.

Reverence, Innocence & Love

The Malhotra Bride; Sunita is a 20 something girl who is still trying to find herself in a world that is trying to mould her into a submissive puppet like most Indian women. That she finds her prince charming right at the first encounter is both unsettling and enchanting for her.

The premise of the story is the liberation of Sunita; who becomes a Malhotra Bride and how it is a win-win situation for both Akshay – billionaire hunk and Sunita – a beautiful damsel.
The story reminded of how it was to be so young and carefree, looking at the world with starry eyes. Dreams and hopes to fulfill and goals to achieve, even the naivety of Sunita reminded me of a time long forgotten in the grind of life.

It made me nostalgic, of first love, that innocent kiss that turned into something to cherish and those hot tempered tiffs that landed me into hotter fun. The straight forward storyline has a few quick surprises and naughty turns that mange to keep the interest going till the last page.

It is a novel for young hearts as well as old because Sundari has been able to strike a beautiful balance between the modern younger generation that manages to cherish the values and ethics of the old.

I recommend this as a read for everyone who values love and family from 18 years to 80 years because this simple romance novella shows that it is possible to love and respect both your lover and your families.

Great book - not a biography

I preface this by saying that I like Robert Herjavec very much.
I checked my bookstore and my library every week for 2 months before coming to Amazon to get this book.
He's a great guy.

If you asked me what I thought about this book, I'd say it's a great book if you want to know what it takes to be a Great Entrepreneur. Lots of practical insight. Easy to understand without being condenscending. It only makes him MORE likeable, and it lets you really understand his mindset.

If you asked me if this was a great "Biography", I'd tell you absoutely not.
That's just not what this book is.
I was hoping for a chronological accounting of how he built his companies and sold them.
None of that is in this book.

This is a well written book, and if you are looking for "how does the mind of an entrepreneur work" then this is a great book. But just be aware that it's NOT a traditional biography.

Would You Go To Lunch With A Dragon?

I am a big fan of Dragon's Den & Shark Tank, I record every show.
I love the shows' concept and enjoy seeing people make their dreams come true with a little help from the Dragons.

Some of my favorite shows, however, are the episodes about the Dragons themselves.
Who are the Dragons really? How did they start their careers? How do they conduct themselves in business?

As a business owner and entrepreneur I am always fascinated about the success of others and look for tips to apply to my own business.
When I saw Robert's book DRIVEN for the first time I was very curious to peek inside and discover more about him.
Robert takes you through his thought process as to what it takes to succeed in business.

He offers tips about things you should do in various situations but more importantly he explains the "mindset" successful business people like him have.
I thoroughly enjoyed DRIVEN because it answers the types of questions I would ask Robert if I had the opportunity to have lunch with him.

Basic principles for new Entrepreneurs, but

I recommend this book to anyone considering going into business for themselves. He presents a very thorough introduction to all aspects of what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur, and clearly shines the light on what natural strengths you need to have as prerequisite. The ONLY thing I didn't like about this book was his insistence on working 24/7 - really long hours at the expense of weekends, family vacation, etc. And in the context of the book, I felt like the title was decided on by the publisher and so he sprinkled in obligatory pieces to justify the title. I am a recovered work-a-holic and a life long entrepreneur - Successful entrepreneur. I am a living testimony that you do not have to sacrifice family, health, well-being - life balance values to be a successful entrepreneur.

The authors also discuss the historical antecedents of these political and social neglects, including the distortion of policy priorities arising from inequalities of political power. Following on from this, the book considers the scope for public action to address these earlier biases and achieve a transformation of policy priorities.

Beginning with an introductory chapter presenting the motivation, focus, and approach of the book, it discusses the respective roles of the market mechanism and government action in economic development and discusses the particular role of public involvement in the fields of health and education. International comparisons of development experiences are brought to bear on the diagnosis of India's successes and failures, and the work discusses the lessons to be learnt from the contrasting development experiences of different states within India, with particular attention to Kerala's outstanding success in social fields. The authors consider the role of public action and political organization in promoting social opportunities. Attention is drawn, in particular, to the part played by widespread illiteracy in suppressing that process and perpetuating social inequalities. The work also looks at the issue of basic education, including a critical assessment of public policy in this field. The issue of gender inequality is discussed, and the role of women's agency in the expansion of social opportunities for both women and men is explored. The work concludes by consolidating the argument and discussing the policy implication of the analyses presented. A statistical appendix presents a comparative picture of India and other developing countries, and also the comparative performance of different states within India.

Indispensable reading on India!

The book is indispensable reading for anybody who wants to understand the challenges to India's economic and social development beyond the glossy picture painted by Goldman Sachs or McKinsey. The authors see poverty as "capability deprivation' and investigate the inability of the Indian government to provide social services, particularly health care, education and women's agency as means of opening up capabilities. They blame the government's inability of providing these services and do not trust market liberalization as an alternative avenue. The monograph is saturated with facts and useful comparisons within India and with other developing countries, particularly China. I found it quite annoying, however, that the authors repeatedly point out that some Indian States perform better than China as a whole. It would have been fair to compare India as a whole with China as a whole - and the best Indian performers with the best Chinese performers. Interesting, however, the comparison of China's drastic fertility reduction through coercion (one-child-policy) with the equally impressive reduction in fertility (at least in the southern states) without coercion and in a democratic context. But read yourself!

Amaryta and Jean has been honest in describing the India development, especially in the area of the basic human need for million of poor Indian, development is not just GDP and GDP/capital, but basic human needs such as education, healthcare for the poor are also critical. In the area of comparison, first time I realized the mortality rate (under 5) of India is so shocking, every 8 years (take 1986), the total number of children die under 5 years old is more than the total death in China's Great Leap Forward (p68-69), more than 30million. China's GLP happen once but for India, since independence, the total number of children die under 5 is not a number anyone want to calculate.
In the recent year, author is preaching for human basic need for his fellow countryman such as universal elementary education, better healthcare..., I respect him.
