Introduction

The Financial Times Mastering series is the product of a unique collaboration between the FT and some of the world's leading international business schools. Mastering Information Management, drawn from a weekly series that appeared in the newspaper, is the sixth book to emerge from this partnership. As with its predecessors, we believe it combines some of the important basic principles of managing in this area with fresh ideas for 21st century students and practitioners.

Why Mastering Information Management? Few topics are more pressing at present – or more relevant to a company's short-term profitability and long-term survival prospects – yet executives remain confused by much of the advice they receive and disappointed by the payback on many of their investments. One reason may be companies' growing obsession with technology and their tendency to neglect the actual information which is stored, accessed, retrieved and distributed by that technology, the quality of the information, and the needs of users.

Note that the title of this book is not Mastering IT – that would imply more concentration on what goes on inside the boxes on your desk and on how networks actually function. About the Author

DONALD A MARCHAND is Professor of Information Management and Strategy at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland - one of the leading executive development institutes and business schools in Europe and globally.

Professor Marchand is currently Director for the IMD/Andersen Consulting Partnership Research Project entitled Navigating Business Success. This two-year study examines the perspectives of senior executives on the management of information, people, and information technology in achieving superior business performance. The study includes surveys of over 1300 senior managers, representing 103 international companies in 22 countries and 25 industries, as well as over 25 case studies.

rofessor Marchand is an advisor to senior executives of leading service and manufacturing companies in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific.

He is the author/co-author of six books and over 140 articles, book chapters, cases and reports. He is the editor of Competing With Information, the first volume of the IMD Executive Development Series published by John Wiley & Sons (2000). He is also the co-author of Information Orientation: The Link to Business Performance, a forthcoming book published by Oxford University Press (2000).

From July 1987 to June 1994, Professor Marchand was Dean and Professor of Information Management at the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University.

He received his PhD and MA at UCLA and his BA at the University of California at Berkeley. He has also served as Vice President of Worldwide Chapter and Alliance Development for the Society for Information Management - SIM International.

THOMAS H. DAVENPORT is Director of the Andersen Consulting Institute for Strategic Change, a Professor in the Management Information Systems Department at the Boston University Graduate School of Management and is currently Distinguished Scholar in Residence at Babson College.

He is widely published author an acclaimed speaker on the topics of information and knowledge management, re-engineering, enterprise systems and the use of information technology in business. He has a PhD from Harvard University in organizational behavior and has taught at the Harvard Business School, the University of Chicago, and the University of Texas at Austin Graduate School of Business. He has also directed research at Ernst & Young, McKinsey & Company, and CSC Index.

Dr. Davenport wrote the first article on re-engineering and the first book, Process Innovation: Reengineering Work through Information Technology (Harvard Business School Press, 1993). His most recent work focuses on new approaches to information and knowledge management. He has recently published two well-received books on this topic, Information Ecology: Mastering the Information and Knowledge Environment (Oxford University Press, may 1997) and Working Knowledge: Managing What Your Organization Knows (Harvard Business School Press, November 1997). His next book on enterprise systems, Mission Critical, is scheduled for publication by Harvard Business School Press in January 2000.

His articles have appeared in Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, California Management Review and many other publications. Tom also writes a monthly column created expressly for him by CIO Magazine called "Think Tank". He is one of the founding editors of Knowledge, Inc, and has been a board member for a variety of organizations.

The latest thoughts on Information Technology management

I picked up this book because it seemed to be the best current book about the state of the art of Information Technology management. It contains short easy to read articles on topics ranging from Supply Chain, Knowledge Management and eCommerce written by some IT gurus including many academics, Peter Drucker and some Anderson people.
It comes with bit of a European perspective. I have read that European companies get better return on their investment in IT and perhaps this book reflects this. It lacks the hype of most of the American IT management books. My only criticism is that the book is somewhat academic, lacks depth in parts and is very light on the technology side of things. Glancing at the index for "Java" or "Open Source" one notices it is missing these key new technologies.
For what I was looking for it was great - an overall picture of the state of IT management theory. It filled in some of my knowledge gaps and made good subway reading.

Her engagement party was being held in Celebre, Boston's best restaurant—the place where Matt had first proposed to her. The champagne was flowing. There were red roses by the dozen on every table, and fairy lights lit the satin-draped walls. She wore a watered-silk dress of softest silver green and the McLachlan family diamond necklace, earrings and bracelet set, all supplied by her adoring fianc�.

Given the stress of the past nine months, after Matt's father's death and the near collapse of both his business and hers, it felt amazing that they were here now.

Well, amazing that she was here, anyway. Matt fitted into this world perfectly.

The cream of Boston society—all childhood friends of Matt's—filled the room and spilled out onto the terrace. Her own family hadn't been able to make it from Sydney at such short notice. But her friends, affectionately known as The Wedding Belles, because they ran a complete-weddingpackage business in Boston, were here either with their own wonderful men or working the room. They were creating new business just by being there, because they were responsible for this "wedding of the year."

Julie shook her head, as if to clear it. She, plain, publicity-shy Julie Montgomery from Rockdale, a suburb of Sydney, Australia, was the bride in what the media had dubbed Boston's Wedding of the Year. She, just a simple general assistant for The Wedding Belles, had captured the heart of Boston's most eligible bachelor. Why they'd chosen her wedding, she didn't know, any more than she knew why a man like Matt had ever fallen for someone like her.

His dark hair curled just enough to look sexily mussed; she loved the light streaks of early grey about his ears and temples, which always made her fingers ache to plunge right in there. His eyes—what woman could look into that ice-blue perfection and not do what she'd done the first minute she'd seen him? Intelligent, kind and strong, he could never see someone in need without doing something about it, whether helping out at charity events or donating funds to needy causes. If she'd fallen in love with him at a glance, she'd fallen even deeper for the man beneath, the man of integrity and generosity. He worked hard, had true creative genius, and a heart that never stopped giving.

He'd been so busy lately, and, oh, how she'd missed him. But tonight was theirs, their engagement party, and he was hers alone. Needing to be near him, she smiled and detached herself from her future mother-in-law and began to go to him.

Julie held in the sigh. This was one part of her engagement she found less than appealing. As the love interest of Matthew McLachlan, president of McLachlan Marine Industries since his father's death, she was subject to public scrutiny. It was almost like being part of a second marriage. She could always count on the presence of the press in her life, during both the good times and definitely through the bad.

The Belles had come up with the idea of throwing them a wedding when it looked like Matt was going to lose the company after his father's wildly unsuccessful speculations. Since then her private love story had become public entertainment. The invitation list for the quiet family wedding The Belles had planned was now up to over 150, and the simple garden venue was now the cathedral on the harbour front, which had room for media photo shoots and the live television feed. Their wedding had become an official "human interest story," and was being followed by a top magazine, three tabloids and two TV stations covering the tristate area.

But all the media interest had also saved The Belles from going under when the high-society Vandiver wedding cancellation had left them deep in the red; so Julie's every smile for the cameras held as much gratitude and relief as it did resentment.

She turned now, with the smile that had felt more like a grimace for the past few months. "Of course… Jemima, isn't it?"

Jemima Whittaker of Boston People Today, the magazine covering her wedding, beamed at her. "So good of you to remember."

Remember? It was impossible not to when the woman had been in her face almost constantly for the past few months.

"So how do you feel about your fianc�'s phenomenal success in saving McLachlan Marine Industries from financial flatlining?"

Her gaze flicked to Matt, talking to some people she didn't recognise in the centre of the room—probably more members of the press—and she felt her smile soften with the love she couldn't hide. "I'm incredibly proud of him, of course, but I knew he could do it. He's so dedicated to his workers and their families."

"Your fianc� didn't just save jobs, Miss Montgomery. The new water converter he's invented will revolutionise the industry." The reporter sounded one point less than smug with the information. "The new contracts with Jet Stream Industries and Red Line Marine—not to mention the giants in the motor industry showing marked interest in a land prototype—will give McLachlan's more power and wealth than it's known in its eighty-year history. Matt's done more than rescue the company from the investment mistakes of his father—he's become a multimillionaire, is being hailed as a wunderkind, and has been nominated for businessman of the year after he gave shares in the converter to every McLachlan's worker that waited for their overdue salaries. Many of them are now well on their way to being rich. How do you feel about that?"

It took all of Julie's willpower to not blink or frown. Matt had enjoyed so much success in the public arena, had done so much more than save the company, and he hadn't told her? "As I said, I always knew he was a genius," she replied with another halfway-to-grimace smile, wondering why this reporter knew so much about the importance of Matt's invention, while she, his fianc�e, knew nothing.

"I suppose you think so because he chose you instead of Sara Enderby or Elise Pettifer," Jemima laughed, totally without spite—probably because, like Julie herself, she came from less exalted origins than most in the room. Jemima's hand swept to where Matt stood in a crowd of people, laughing—and it was only then Julie realised that six of the eight people surrounding him were very attractive women. "You're one secure woman, obviously. If Matthew McLachlan were my fianc�, and he had two very beautiful exes making him laugh the way those women are right now, I'd drape myself over him faster than Speedy Gonzalez." She laughed again as she said, "Or kick them out of the way like that baby kangaroo on the cartoons."

The two exquisite blondes on either side of him were his ex-girlfriends?

Self-control. Julie held her hands at her sides, refusing to check the current state of her French twist. Her bright-red French twist. She didn't smooth her hands over her lightly applied makeup. She knew the freckles showed anyway.

"With Elise in particular, everyone was taking bets on the wedding date," Jemima went on, still without malice but with a good deal of curiosity. Digging. "She's an engineer, too, you know. In fact, I've heard rumours that she worked with him on the design of the water converter. They seemed the perfect match. That's why there was such interest when he broke up with her, and was seen with you so soon after."

A perfect match…oh, weren't they just? The handsome, high-born genius and the beautiful, high-society woman, one of his own people, who made him laugh so easily. Perfection, side by side….

Julie had met both women earlier, but hadn't thought much about either of them afterward. They'd seemed nice women, without any sign of cattiness in their conversation or demeanour. Not by word or act had they shown anything but kindness to her.

But then, why would they need to compete, when they were so beautiful?

Then she remembered the look in Matt's eyes when he'd seen her tonight, and the world seemed to spin the right way again. "You'll have to ask Matt about who he works with and why. That's his place. Thanks for the advice, but after all, those women are in his past—I'm his future. I'm the one wearing his ring." With a cool smile she ended the interview.

But she didn't continue toward Matt. That might make it seem as if she didn't trust him, which could create fodder for a speculative story about the status of their relationship. She'd had enough of that in the past few months.

Finally the night was over, his gift to Julie. Now, after all his months of work to save McLachlan's, he could be alone with the woman he loved.

Matthew McLachlan smiled, almost bursting with the pride and love he felt. In a love story filled with obstacles—from his father's opposition to Matt falling for an unknown Australian woman, to the intense media speculation, to the problems with his business and hers—Julie had risen to every occasion. She'd won everyone over with her quirky humour, her strength, grace and dignity. An extraordinary woman… and she was all his. His woman, his love.

He'd known she felt intimidated by the overwhelming media and social interest in their lives, especially since The Belles'plans for their wedding had become public knowledge. He'd seen her trepidation about tonight. Then he'd given her the dress he'd bought for her on his last trip to New York and the McLachlan diamonds his mother had brought down for her, the possession of all the future McLachlan brides. Outstanding book --- Comprehensive and Example- rich book.

I have been functioning in this web services world for the past one plus years. I go through various articles, engaged in real time web services projects etc. This book provides the reader all the in-sight into web services. Web Services is a buzzing word around the software world as a next generation of distributing computing. This well organized book covers all the realistic topics starts with what are web services, need and different business models including B2B, B2C scenarios. It also states how web services are different and advantageous from present technologies and the core web services technologies (XML, SOAP, WSDL and UDDI) the building blocks of web services. It discuss in detail about the implementation of web services in both .NET and Java.
Absolutely, Web Services transfigure the software world, but it has yet to ripe out to use it in enterprise systems. Still web services are maturing. At present, web services are excellent for plain message transaction from one program/application to other. That is Web Services can be used in non-critical applications where security, reliability are not significant. One of the major concerns, we take notice of in Web Services is security. If there's one thing that has slowed the widespread acceptance and implementation of Web Services, it's their lack of security standards, reliability issues and Transaction Processing etc.
I take pleasure in reading the Web services Security chapter. It explores all the security issues such as Basic security issues, SSL, XML Signature, XML Encryption, XKMS, SAML, XACML and WS-Security in a comprehensive manner. Appendices contain VisualBasic.NET and Java Live-code implementation of web services based applications.
Microsoft and IBM have produced a road map outlining the additional Web Services security specifications along with WS-security. This book explained Microsoft's GXA, a series of specifications, which address the various problems faced by the web services in depth along with .NET MyServices, and Mappoint.NET. The two things, I enjoy very much in this book are the employing of abundant case studies and the vast Internet and Web Resources. All the case studies provide the reader a realistic knowledge. The chapters of this book walk around a wide range of recommended reading lists. All these resources help one for further reading.
Written for IT managers, software developers and business professionals alike, this guide explains the business and technology of Web services.

Just right

This is an extremely thorough, well-written book that covers web services from the ground up. Not tied to any one company's philosophy or implementation of web services standards, this book approaches the subject at a high level yet full of detail. Unlike most technical books, this books reads like a novel. I give it my highest recommendation for those of you that want to understand the underlying web services standards and framework.

Not for programmers

I hoped that this book, being a "Technical Introduction", would get me up to speed as quickly as possible on the nuts and bolts of web services. As a programmer I had a real world requirement to build web service client functionality into one of my programs immediately ("yesterday") and bought this book to put me in the picture about the web services framework from a technical point of view.

But after having ploughed through the first jargon-laden five chapters at no time did I feel I was getting any closer to completing my task. Not until Chapter 6 does Deitel introduce SOAP, but still with no crystalline description of the client-server interaction.

I abandoned the book at that stage and sought out magazine and web articles, dedicated to my programming language of choice, that gave examples and background descriptions of hands-on building of SOAP clients. Ultimately that's what enabled me to get the job done. What I'd read in Deitel didn't put me in much better position than if I'd never read it.

For example Deitel covers the Microsoft SOAP Toolkit in less than one page. I feel programmers of all persuasions would have benefitted from a detailed description of what it does and how it is used, even if they ultimately don't end up using that specific tool.

I'm not saying this book wouldn't be useful for non-technical people who want some sort of clue about what web services are, how they can be used, and vaguely how the operate.

Perhaps it's not Deitel's fault I was misguided by the word "technical" in the book's name, and thought this book would be orientated towards programmers.

How to make a machine that makes honey

Thomas Seeley has written an amazing book that will work for many different types of readers at many levels. The book outlines experiments that Seeley did with prepared hives to demonstrate the system dynamics of how a hive adapts to the resources around it. Seeley's style is easy for a layperson to read with clear charts and pictures. This is a great book to savor; read a chapter, then daydream about how these creatures could be constructed to perform their functions.

I got a lot out of the book. First of all, it's a narrative of Seeley's experimental method; he labels a hive (puts the bees in a hive in a refrigerator, pulls them out one by one and puts identifying tags on each), sets up feeding stations with different concentrations of sugar at different distances, then observes behavior to demonstrate how individual variation in bees optimizes the hive's collection of resources. Second, it's a pretty good introduction to bee physiology and the hive's social system. Seeley describes experiments tracking the individual jobs of bees as they age and, in doing so, he covers how and what the bees do. Third, Seeley reviews and describes the previous literature, giving a history of behavioral study of bees. Finally, he develops his thesis regarding the hive as a system, with parallels to systems theory and studies of hierarchies of organization.

This is a fun read; easy to get through, thought provoking, giving you appreciation for the author's work and for the creatures that are his subject.

One Amazing Book about Bees

This is a special scientific book, for the author tells the reader not only WHAT we know about the inner workings of honey bee colonies, but also HOW we know it. Through simple but graceful writing, accompanied by many diagrams, Seeley takes you on a step-by-step journey through his experimental analysis of how the members of a bee colony work together to gather the nectar, pollen, and water that they need. I think anyone interested in seeing how a human has dissected the complex internal organization of a bee hive will find this a rewarding read. I especially liked chapter 6, where Seeley explains that the bees have several kinds of communication dances, not just the famous waggle dance, to activate more bees for making honey.

While I'd hate to do without most of my 50 plus books on bees and beekeeping, this book would be THE one I'd keep if I could have just one. Comprehensive information that is both fascinating and useful, clearly and even beautifully expressed. More books should retain the context of honey bee colony as social (super) organism.
