History and Fiction

This book by Gardiner is a quick read. It is different from the Secret of the Serpent book in that this material is presented in a fictional format. The plus side to that is that the Secret of the Serpent book was somewhat stilted and hard to read straight through (like a reference guide). This Brotherhood book is a clean and fun read. At the end of the book Gardiner includes a timeline of important historical dates and events that can help spur on additional research if you are so inclinded.

I only had one pet peeve with this book and that was the errors in some of the writing. I found dozens of grammatical and spelling errors. I personally find it a bit annoying and was tempted to send my marked-up copy directly to Gardiner. Don't get me wrong, it is easy to read. My guess is that Gardiner's resources are somewhat limited and he did not have the opportunity to enlist the services of a professional editor or proofreader.

Very interesting story...

This book, based on research and also fiction, is a good read. It is a fast-paced mystery, and it draws you in. I kept holding my breath to see where the ending would take us...and it was worth the wait. I also enjoyed Mr. Gardiner's book "Secrets of the Serpent" and his dvd "Legend of the Serpent"--he has done other books I would like to read but I can only afford so much, especially when his "Grail" book is exorbitantly priced on Amazon. Oh well, maybe one day. But I enjoyed "Brotherhood of the Snake" and would buy it again, even in spite of the run-on sentences...at the beginning of the book he explains that some of his concepts made it where publishers wouldn't publish his book, so he had to make it fiction. I think there's a lot of truth to what Mr. Gardiner is forced to describe as just fiction, but only the author truly knows where the facts end and fiction begins...it's still a great read at any rate.

The basic story is cool but, the book needs refinement. Too many scenes, and a few characters seemed like they could have been expanded upon in better detail. Good basic plot though.

Susan Hall is the most amazing woman I have ever had the pleasure of knowing- her journey of healing herself from cancer is something all people diagnosed with cancer should have access to, seeing how it is possible to beat cancer with an affordable and healthy alternative to chemo/radiation. This is an astounding book.

A Must Read

Grab this book for yourself and/or a loved one and trust this wonderful woman who has already taken the journey to a cure.
I know a woman who used the formula to heal herself of breast cancer and her 5 friends who used the traditional

Don't be afraid...there is hope!

What a breath of fresh air. Who would have thought that curing cancer could be so simple. I truly believe that God has raised Susan Hall to bring hope to those suffering with cancer. This book shows you that you do not need to be afraid. There is hope, there is healing, and there is victory. If you are suffering with cancer, if you are scared, then this is truly a God send to you. Thank you Susan Hall for being obedient to God's calling in your life and for showing us cancer is not a death sentence, but a disease for which there is an actual cure.

Written to show off. Not to teach

I understand ML very well, and I find this text nearly impossible to penetrate. Formulas are reduced to their most rudimentary forms. Sure it is impressive that the author obviously has a good grasp on the topic, but there are virtually no explanations behind the math. This book was written just to show off, not to teach. Definitely the most pompous book on ML I've ever seen.

Outstanding

This is a very challenging textbook that is best used as a part of a graduate machine learning class, as a reference or for a very dedicated self-learner. I recommend the edition published by MIT or the ebook from the MIT site. The focus of this book is application and the essentials of theory are covered very briefly in the beginning. Sometimes more exposition is needed to understand topics, however, this book has been the single most important to my work as a data scientist and it is always on my desk. It took me about one year to get from cover to cover.

Alpaydin provides comprehensive coverage on the most common machine learning techniques, starting from a probabilistic perspective and continuing to discriminant models. Bayesian analysis, dimensionality reduction, support vector machines (kernel machines), and unsupervised learning are covered in detail, along with techniques applicable to image recognition, NLP, and AI. The end of each chapter includes a bibliography which helps for deeper dives into specific topics. The notation is simple and fairly consistent throughout the book.

Since the field has become so large no textbook on machine learning can stand alone. Classes in calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics are recommended first, but you can pick this up on the fly when going through the book. Before reading this book, it is helpful to go through an applied approach such as Hands-On Machine Learning with Scikit-Learn and TensorFlow (Géron, 2017). I recommend Deep Learning (Goodfellow et al, 2015) as a continuation to the chapters on multilayer perceptrons. A deeper exploration of theory is provided in texts such as Learning from Data (Abu Mostafa, 2012), Foundations of Machine Learning (Mohri et al, 2012), and Foundations of Data Science (Blum et al, 2016). The PyMC3 documentation is a good companion for the Bayesian sections and the Scikit-learn documentation helps with the content as well.

I hope that Alpaydin releases a fourth edition, however, as it stands I highly recommend this text.

Linda Mizejewski analyzes the Ziegfeld Girl as a cultural icon and argues that during a time when American national identity was in flux, Ziegfeld Girls were both products and representations of a white, upscale, heterosexual national ideal.
Mizejewski traces the Ziegfeld Girl’s connections to turn-of-the-century celebrity culture, black Broadway, the fashion industry, and the changing sexual and gender identities evident in mainstream entertainment during the Ziegfeld years. In addition, she emphasizes how crises of immigration and integration made the identity and whiteness of the American Girl an urgent issue on Broadway’s revue stages during that era. Although her focus is on the showgirl as a “type,” the analysis is intermingled with discussions of figures like Anna Held, Fanny Brice, and Bessie McCoy, the Yama Yama girl, as well as Ziegfeld himself. Finally, Mizejewski discusses the classic American films that have most vividly kept this showgirl alive in both popular and camp culture, including The Great Ziegfeld, Ziegfeld Girl, and the Busby Berkeley musicals that cloned Ziegfeld’s showgirls for decades.

Erroneous, Poorly Researched, Boring

I read this about a year ago... well, read most of it, and emailed the author asking for explanations about where she'd come up with certain 'facts' about the Ziegfeld Follies and Ziegfeld Girls. I never heard back. It was apparent to me that many things she wrote were simply lifted from other erroneous Ziegfeld accounts previously published. The author included only what would suit her premise.

The author apparently knows little if anything about Ziegfeld and his "Girls" or his shows. And like the other reviewer said here, this book is beyond boring.

There are many good books out there on Ziegfeld. Don't waste your money or time on this one.

Ziegfeld through the HERstory lens

This incredibly boring and technical book deliberately skips any possible entertainment value (No kidding - she sneers at other Ziegfeld books and movies in her preface) to focus exclusively on feminist revisionism. Instead of telling us anything personal about the showgirls, headliners or Ziegfeld himself, the whole book is viewed through a psychoanalysizing lens that echoes that familiar boogeyman story, "How The Big Bad White Man Hates You". Every musical act is sexually sinister, every costume a deliberate put-down, and only SHE can decode what they all REALLY meant. For example: There is a picture of Anna Held donning a costume where a black mannequin is affixed to her waist, making it appear that her servant is carrying Anna around in a basket on her back. You've probably seen variations of this costume every Halloween but I'll bet you never saw any sexual meaning behind it, did you? Well, the author does. She writes extensively about the significance of the mannequin being attatched to Anna's waist, giving it an imaginary sexual significance that granted Anna the alleged animal-like sexual appetite of the *lower* class black person while keeping her face attractive, clean and white for the paying audience. Oh yeah, OBVIOUSLY. Sort of puts those Gorilla-holding-a-man-in-a-cage costumes you've seen in a different light now, doesn't it? But REALLY now, could she have had the mannequin sprouting from her neck? Or her back? As Freud reportedly once said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." A lot of the book is like this. A LOT OF IT.

The author reads WAY too much into this stuff, and while I'm sure some of it has a basis in fact, the rest is opinion and revisionism on a grand scale. It's the polar opposite of equally annoying books that breathlessly claim Ziegfeld's follies to be the apex of beauty and humanity, and that we've all gone to hell in a handbasket since. The real story lies somewhere in the middle. Remember that if you read this book.

great workbook

This is a very good workbook, and at less than fifteen dollars, a good value. It's a big book with enough material to provide meaningful work throughout the school-year. The pages are printed in high quality and with several colors per page. They contain progressive math concepts that encourage the use of manipulatives and incorporate helpful tools to build number-sense.

I homeschool my boys 5 and 6. They had quite a bit of education in math prior to starting with Go Math, and I use this workbook with the 6 year old, and the previous one in the Go Math series with the 5 year old. The "grade 1" workbook is simple enough that any student who is comfortable with "seat work" can be helped to understand it. The "grade 2" workbook is significantly more challenging and would be frustrating for a student that is not particularly talented in math or who doesn't have some experience in math education.

I have used math workbooks from Kumon, Sylvan, Scholastic, Comprehensive Curriculum (AEP), Complete Curriculum (Harcourt), DK Publishing, and Brainquest. Go Math is easily the most comprehensive and incorporates the best methods of all of these -- but I would not overlook the use of the others to provide meaningful steps to a complete math education. Importantly, Go Math is marketed to institutional customers, whereas Kumon, Sylvan or even Harcourt's own "Complete Curriculum" are more suited to families wanting to supplement a child's institutional education with some work at home. Kumon and AEP's "Comprehensive Curriculum," both offer books that are suitable for pre-school use.

This edition of Go Math is the "Common Core" edition, which I believe means that it's not State-specific. Some State customers like California or Florida may make specific demands of the publisher, but this "Common Core" edition presumably covers the material that is common for students from any state or suitable for any curriculum authority like this Dad.

This is the best math book ever in my opinion for helping your ...

Hard to find book. Had no issues with my copy. This is the best math book ever in my opinion for helping your child build analytical reasoning skills. You don't just memorize operations, in fact, it teaches you to understand what the heck you are doing, relationships between numbers and you have to think to solve. I use it to supplement what my daughter is learning at school. It is sad that our school systems are not designed to teach good math skills to the majority of children. Those without a good math and education foundation won't be able to work as doctors, engineers, scientists or what have you, and can fall vastly behind as our economy changes. Most of us parents had better be proactive!
