Great book - not a biography

I preface this by saying that I like Robert Herjavec very much.
I checked my bookstore and my library every week for 2 months before coming to Amazon to get this book.
He's a great guy.

If you asked me what I thought about this book, I'd say it's a great book if you want to know what it takes to be a Great Entrepreneur. Lots of practical insight. Easy to understand without being condenscending. It only makes him MORE likeable, and it lets you really understand his mindset.

If you asked me if this was a great "Biography", I'd tell you absoutely not.
That's just not what this book is.
I was hoping for a chronological accounting of how he built his companies and sold them.
None of that is in this book.

This is a well written book, and if you are looking for "how does the mind of an entrepreneur work" then this is a great book. But just be aware that it's NOT a traditional biography.

Would You Go To Lunch With A Dragon?

I am a big fan of Dragon's Den & Shark Tank, I record every show.
I love the shows' concept and enjoy seeing people make their dreams come true with a little help from the Dragons.

Some of my favorite shows, however, are the episodes about the Dragons themselves.
Who are the Dragons really? How did they start their careers? How do they conduct themselves in business?

As a business owner and entrepreneur I am always fascinated about the success of others and look for tips to apply to my own business.
When I saw Robert's book DRIVEN for the first time I was very curious to peek inside and discover more about him.
Robert takes you through his thought process as to what it takes to succeed in business.

He offers tips about things you should do in various situations but more importantly he explains the "mindset" successful business people like him have.
I thoroughly enjoyed DRIVEN because it answers the types of questions I would ask Robert if I had the opportunity to have lunch with him.

Basic principles for new Entrepreneurs, but

I recommend this book to anyone considering going into business for themselves. He presents a very thorough introduction to all aspects of what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur, and clearly shines the light on what natural strengths you need to have as prerequisite. The ONLY thing I didn't like about this book was his insistence on working 24/7 - really long hours at the expense of weekends, family vacation, etc. And in the context of the book, I felt like the title was decided on by the publisher and so he sprinkled in obligatory pieces to justify the title. I am a recovered work-a-holic and a life long entrepreneur - Successful entrepreneur. I am a living testimony that you do not have to sacrifice family, health, well-being - life balance values to be a successful entrepreneur.

This book argues that an assessment of India's failure to eliminate basic deprivations has to go beyond this limited focus, and to take note of the role played in that failure by inadequate public involvement in the provision of basic education, health care, social security, and related fields, Even the fostering of fast and participatory economic growth requires some basic social change, which is not addressed by liberalization and economic incentives. The authors also discuss the historical antecedents of these political and social neglects, including the distortion of policy priorities arising from inequalities of political power. Following on from this, the book considers the scope for public action to address these earlier biases and achieve a transformation of policy priorities.

Beginning with an introductory chapter presenting the motivation, focus, and approach of the book, it discusses the respective roles of the market mechanism and government action in economic development and discusses the particular role of public involvement in the fields of health and education. International comparisons of development experiences are brought to bear on the diagnosis of India's successes and failures, and the work discusses the lessons to be learnt from the contrasting development experiences of different states within India, with particular attention to Kerala's outstanding success in social fields. The authors consider the role of public action and political organization in promoting social opportunities. Attention is drawn, in particular, to the part played by widespread illiteracy in suppressing that process and perpetuating social inequalities. The work also looks at the issue of basic education, including a critical assessment of public policy in this field. The issue of gender inequality is discussed, and the role of women's agency in the expansion of social opportunities for both women and men is explored. The work concludes by consolidating the argument and discussing the policy implication of the analyses presented. A statistical appendix presents a comparative picture of India and other developing countries, and also the comparative performance of different states within India.

Indispensable reading on India!

The book is indispensable reading for anybody who wants to understand the challenges to India's economic and social development beyond the glossy picture painted by Goldman Sachs or McKinsey. The authors see poverty as "capability deprivation' and investigate the inability of the Indian government to provide social services, particularly health care, education and women's agency as means of opening up capabilities. They blame the government's inability of providing these services and do not trust market liberalization as an alternative avenue. The monograph is saturated with facts and useful comparisons within India and with other developing countries, particularly China. I found it quite annoying, however, that the authors repeatedly point out that some Indian States perform better than China as a whole. It would have been fair to compare India as a whole with China as a whole - and the best Indian performers with the best Chinese performers. Interesting, however, the comparison of China's drastic fertility reduction through coercion (one-child-policy) with the equally impressive reduction in fertility (at least in the southern states) without coercion and in a democratic context. But read yourself!

Amaryta and Jean has been honest in describing the India development, especially in the area of the basic human need for million of poor Indian, development is not just GDP and GDP/capital, but basic human needs such as education, healthcare for the poor are also critical. In the area of comparison, first time I realized the mortality rate (under 5) of India is so shocking, every 8 years (take 1986), the total number of children die under 5 years old is more than the total death in China's Great Leap Forward (p68-69), more than 30million. China's GLP happen once but for India, since independence, the total number of children die under 5 is not a number anyone want to calculate.
In the recent year, author is preaching for human basic need for his fellow countryman such as universal elementary education, better healthcare..., I respect him.

Bought a replacement - due to over-useage

I have had this book for several years, and without a doubt, it is THE most used reference book in my library. This is such an impressive teaching aid - it saves SO much time looking up themed or concurrent verses. Some fave lists include the prophesies Jesus fulfilled, Names of Jesus or God, Signs of End Times and what meaning each number has.

I have used this book so much, I have decided to buy a replacement - so I don't lose any pages.

You would not be disappointed to add this book to your reference library.

THE BOOK HAS MANY LISTS THAT ARE NEEDED ONLY ONCE OR TWICE IN A LIFETIME WHEN STUDY OF A SPECIFIC SUBJECT IS NEEDED. THESE LISTS ARE PLACED IN A MANNER THAT MAKES THEM EASY TO UNDERSTAND AND USE.

Great topical book. Wonderful reference for sermons. Well prepared. Simple sentence descriptions for each reference. Names of God list. All sorts of lists that I could not have considered doing a study on has been edifying. Great reference book for all Bible students.

These journal entries by Nirvana front man Cobain record his thoughts from the late 1980s until his suicide in 1994. There are no real answers to his death to be found in this collection of scrawled notes, first drafts of letters, shopping lists, and ballpoint pen drawings, although the nature of Cobain's fame will make it hard for readers not to look for them. At best, a series of intimate portraits emerge: a kid from high school; a cousin and neighbor; a bright, sensitive, fun-loving and morbid punk rocker who became spokesman for a generation he largely detested. Cobain's journals remind fans of how unlikely was his rise to fame: here was a kid from Aberdeen, dreaming of being in the next Meat Puppets, not the next Doors, who signed on with an independent label named SupPop, and ended up changing the course of commercial radio. Cobain's early letters to fellow rockers in the grunge scene also remind readers of how small and close that community was, and of the fairly incendiary politics it had developed through the Reagan years. For a true punk believer like Cobain, the loss of that community was also the loss of himself.

The question of how to package Cobain's journals (originally contained in more than 20 notebooks) became as important as whether they should be published. Courtney Love, Cobain's widow, ultimately decided to go with Riverhead, and her choice appears to have been a good one. Reproduced here are actual notebook pages, filled with the musician's drawings, thoughts, desires, moods, lists, and declarations, showcasing his many talents, as much as his penchant for morbidity, in an amalgamation of handwritings. While this collection offers another level of intimacy for fans who have already experienced the musician's life via records, news clippings, album art, and several biographies, no one involved with the project provides any context, and this absence is keenly felt. Notes are scattered and applied to things that are of little interest, while other confusing pieces are left without the slightest comment. Given Love's vigilance in all matters Nirvana and Cobain, it is surprising that she was not more hands-on here. Still, Journals remains a good complement to Charles R. Cross's Heavier Than Heaven, which references the notebooks, and a unique addition to popular music collections.

Reading a diary offers a thrilling--and dangerous--immediacy ofaccess to the author's thoughts. When those private pages arepublished, however, the impersonality of typesetting and crisp marginsholds us at a distance. This volume, culled from more than 20spiral-bound journals the musician left behind after his 1994 death,brings us closer by using facsimile pages to present Cobain in his ownuneven handwriting. There are diary entries, song lyrics, guitarchords, comic strips, letters, drafts of promotional material, andstream-of-consciousness scrawlings. Although they're so varied thatit's hard to fill in a complete picture of the man, maybe that isthe complete picture: a fragmented, immensely talented individual whowas only able to put the pieces together during his cathartic, chaoticlive performances. Some writings reflect his efforts to get earlyversions of Nirvana on track professionally, and others reveal hisconflicting emotions at having succeeded in a musical milieu wheresuccess itself was often seen as the enemy. Some giveaways areentirely inadvertent--it's strangely touching that Cobain, whostruggled with heroin addiction, couldn't even spell the word properly(he added an e on the end). With a Nirvana greatest-hits CD justhitting the stores after protracted legal wrangling between his widowand his former bandmates, there's bound to be a resurgence of interestin the straw-haired lost boy of alternative rock. APPROACH WITH RESPECT, THEN SMILE

If you want to know who Kurt Cobain was, this is a necessary piece of the complex puzzle to ingest. Yes it is an intrusion into the guarded secrets of this complicated man's mind. But guess what - he's not here to protest. Is it disrespectful to read a dead person's diary? It is if you're looking for something lurid [which is not in these Journals]. I do recommend doing some research first so that the undated entries make more sense. Listen to Nirvana's music and the pre-Nirvana music. There's a lot of early Kurt in here, the literally starving penniless musician. This is where the successful Nirvana came from. Look at performance videos, watch interviews. If you still find Nirvana interesting, still find Kurt Cobain worthy, then buy these Journals. He is smart, angry, funny, articulate, with a rare ability to stand outside himself and see himself clearly. He doesn't always like what he sees, both in himself and in the world, the music industry in particular. Oftentimes I will know a particular story as told by a band member or friend, then read his version in his Journals, and break up my insides with laughter. He really does crack me up, makes me smile so many times. Especially after reading the Journals, I wish I had known him, could have hung out with him, called him Friend. He is worth the effort.

"Im really bored with everyones concerned advice"

I don't think there's any doubt at this point that Kurt Cobain was a musical genius, and that he had more of a flair for the practical side of music shooting videos just as he wanted them shot and dealing with things than he is given credit for, paying tribute to his punk rock roots and very specifically the bands that meant the most to him (The Melvins, The Meat Puppets, Mudhoney) without once de-escalating the titanic rise of Nirvana.

These almost dadaistic journals, are replete Cobain's hatred of his parents' generation and their legacy while admitting his own willful apathy: "I like to complain and do nothing to make things better. I like to blame my parents generation for coming so close to social change then giving up after a few successful efforts by the media & government to deface the movement by using the Mansons and other Hippie representatives as propaganda examples on how they were nothing but unpatriotic, communist, satanic, inhuman diseases, and in turn the baby boomers became the ultimate, conforming, yuppie hypocrites a generation has ever produced." Cobain even goes so far as to write a fictive memory of a man who went to Woodstock and praises it without really know if he was there or not. At the same time, he writes about "The Who" so much that it's pretty obvious he enjoys their music even if he'd rather "blow his head off than become Pete Townshend". The sad thing is, I think grunge was even more wired to sell out than the hippie "movement".

The journals are replete with these kind of ironic contradictions. I don't think they are accidental; all of them fit into a sort of metatextual portrait of a man who saw things at such a distance from himself that when the reality of his blockbuster success hits home, the only defense mechanism he has left is the anger and apathy he started with. He talks with genuine passion about evils like racism, misogyny, and rape, and on the next page he deflates the seriousness of it by mocking Telly Savalas and recommending that the reader "check out his interviews for a cheap and immediate laugh." These fascinating, infinitely self-deceiving and almost Borgesian journals are puzzles in puzzles that spill out, like his lyrics, into bullets.

If Kurt Cobain wanted help, there is no evidence of that in these diaries except his eerie repetition of "I would rather blow my head off than...(become Pete Townshend, Robert Plant, etc.) It seems like an earnest chronicle of a short life with a wistful hope, every now and then, that someone would save him from his ultimate plan: to become a mega rock star and then burn out, just like the rock icons of his parents' generation. I have to wonder after reading all this if he even had a specific intention of playing a kind of joke--both on the music industry and the underground--by signing with Geffen for "Nevermind". He is slightly amused at his own horrible inner torment regarding being a "sellout". Heroin and deliberate irony as a way of life coupled with the kind of success Nirvana's music attracted are enough to kill anybody, even someone of his magnitude and especially a man of such painful empathy and sensitivity.

All of this, of course, has a personal root. In a brief letter to his father, he tells him very concisely that "I never sided with mother because of my complete contempt for you both growing up." He also depicts him, in a very well drawn and almost amusing cartoon, as a man who drinks beer and cries on his wife's stomach while talking about what a tough guy his son will be, what a wonderful wife beater he will mature into. Kurt's foot tears out of the womb, kicking him in the head.

No one should feel they are "intruding" on anyone when reading these journals. They start out with a invitation to plow in while "he's off working". A haunting record of a cultural prophet and musical genius who kept it together just long enough let all his contradictions kill him.

Nice to meet you...

Since one can't exactly review this book for content because it is a man's journal who I'm sure had no intention of ever publishing, I will review the product itself and provide an insight on what you can expect when reading it.

The book's format is easy enough to explain - cover looks like an old notebook, pages are scans right out of an old notebook. This is a thick book! You have almost 294 pages. It also has nice dimensions and the quality of the scans are really great too. There is a Notes section at the end of the book that has a few of the journal entries transcribed for easier reading and also gives some identity to who the people mentioned in the journals are.

Reading this did feel voyeuristic, but it did not feel wrong. Of course it's going to feel different for everyone who reads it if they choose to do so. I went into this not knowing a ton about Kurt or Nirvana or the emergence of grunge. I was only 7 when Kurt committed suicide so I didn't become a fan of Nirvana until he had already been dead about 9-10 years, but I loved the music of Nirvana and recognized Kurt as a highly influential musician and artist. Reading "Journals" opened up entirely new, and very important, perspectives to me. Here are the most important two, briefly:
1 - Kurt Cobain was indeed a human being
2 - Kurt Cobain was absolutely hilarious, witty, smart, sarcastic, self-aware, and in love with music

Becoming familiar with Kurt in this way has made me appreciate the music of Nirvana even more. I highly recommend purchasing Journals (if you are comfortable with that), and getting to know Kurt through his own words and drawings.

Journalistic but not scholarly

For those with a penchant for titillating controversies, the book is a journalistic mine of the most recent church scandals. But for those looking for a more indepth analysis of the ills of the Church, how scandals in the Church reflect current problems in Philippine society, how the sins of the Philippine Church fare with the sins of the global Catholic Church, now and based on its 2000 year history, etc. the book is relatively shallow. Even the secrets about which the book speaks of are hardly a secret to one who reads newspapers and watch television, except, I guess, those prone to forgetfulness. Perhaps the book will sell because of what it speaks of--who doesn't want to hear of church scandals??--but I doubt if it will have mutiple printings due to intellectual and scholarly relevance.

Priests on the Limelight

Rufo sheds light on a closeted organization and does it through an excellent journalistic endeavor. Here are interviews of prominent and relevant characters in the politics of the Catholic Church in the Philippine setting. Insomuch as he exposes the scandals that has beset the organization, Rufo also brings you to the roots of such anomalous behavior. His analysis starts at the organizational structure and moves on link by link in the chain of events that led to the church's major scandals. More importantly, this book paints a vivid historical account of how legacies within the church were established as well as the ways with which these were thrown asunder. Rufo could have expounded his interviews to rural priests as I'm sure their stories would be wealthy resources for the scandals he gave light to.

This book exists as a challenge, to put it bluntly, for the clergymen to wake up from being full of themselves and face the challenges of the times.

I have been following this diet carefully and so far I'm seeing results. I look forward to promising results to reach my goal. The foods on here are very delicious and most are easy to make. I have read that a lot of this food will help boost my metabolism!

I ordered this book for my sister . She followed Dr. Ian K. Smith’s six week weight shredding diet plan. It worked wonders on her because of her dedication and sincerity in following the schedule. This book by Betty Johnson : Shred Diet Guide And Recipes Made Simple , is simply great. The first part of the book tells gives a nice overview about Shred Diet , its advantages and the plan outline etc.. and the second part of the book consists of some mouth-watering ( yet weight shredding) recipes , week wise. I personally loved the recipe that my sister tried – Chicken and Zucchini Meatballs .. !! Mouth watering it was :D She liked the Chicken and Broccoli soup , which I didn’t like much.

The recipes mentioned in this book are all easy to follow and most of the ingredients are also easily available. All in all a good buy , worth the price paid for. .

I love how this book is laid out – it is perfect for my scattered brain for sure! It really helps to be able to read the summary of each chapter at the end, and that’s how I noticed I overlooked some important section. I am really intrigued by this diet and it’s 6-week cycle. Knowing I can have some of my favorite foods (in moderation) somewhere soon during the cycle no matter how fattening it might be helps give me the motivation to stick with the diet without feeling deprived. I am ready to get started on my New Year’s weight loss resolution early through the SHRED diet, and just maybe I can avoid gaining weight over the holidays and still get to enjoy the special treats during the season by following it.
